Awesome sounds like a great trip

If its distance offshore I was 13km's out into the tasman two weeks ago at the ahipara banks

it was a solo trip as well!

Makes for a nice easy trip aye!
I must say though, had I have actually caught some decent fish the day I went out with Kerry I would have felt like I was cheating, luckily for me my 1 pannie wasn't enough to feel bad about hitching a ride

So does that mean you cheated when you got all those great fish at the barrier on the "mothership trip"

No way, that was just a floating bedroom/kitchen/bathroom - didn't you hear how we took turns to paddle it there

100 would be an average trip for me...150 if I really push it, northlanders are born tough.
With kerry's help I'd like to do a 36000 round trip paddletow one day soon. Have yet to catch a decent puka from the yak. We can launch off the beach I fished last saturday, I gave the locals everything I kept and got permission to launch there anytime , It will knock off a few miles off the trip. But then again the boat is comfortable eh.

I know another spot you could do a first ever...was asked to go there Friday to stay the night and fish for broadbill...guys out there a day ago hooked 13 of em. Anybody landed a broadbill from a yak before?
Only person mad enough would have to be limitless...what say you? Feel like a casual 30 mile paddle sir? I'll put take a support boat.
..just so we can keep the rum cold.

30 nautical miles out = roughly 55.5km, that's 120km round trip allowing for a bit of drift - I think the old "armstrong outboard" would need replacement after that
Then there's the issue of playing a broadie from a yak, just imagine if you did actually get it close and had that sword flailing around...
Haha, I'm crazy, just not quite that crazy - but I'll help man the chase boat for someone else
Mmmmm... but if it was 30 miles round trip... that might be do-able

Cant get the You tube link at work but there is a Jim Simmons Ocean Kayak video where they hook 2 marlin on kayaks and get towed 11km over 4 hours. The second is hooked up as they are following the first hook up trying to keep up with him. Sure someone will land a marlin on a yak soon, you dont have to go huge distances off shore to get them, there have been a few hooked real close to land this year. Think its more about having the flexibility to go when the water temp, tide and weather are correct rather than saying we will go on saturday.
We went 50km on one day in our charity paddle which was a lot but fishing was banned as we had to catch up on a lost day. Was hard paddling through the blue water in 40m off Stony Bay. Whenever i flicked the fishfinder on there were huge blobs everywhere and it was the first real birds workup we saw.

I've had a marlin in my sights for several years now as a paddle-from-shore challenge (rather than using a mother ship), and there are several places around the country where this is doable without paddling far off the coast. In fact there are a couple of places where if you're more than a few hundred meters out you've paddled too far. Unfortunately I've not yet been able to time it right, but someone said something about perseverance... or was that persistence...
Broadies are a whole different fish though, I've seen what they can do and I'm not sticking my butt anywhere within reach of one of those swords!

But given the ammount of Marlin landed when the Taranaki Classic was on I am suprised that none of the Naki guys have hooked one yet. Maybe Tara Yakka will get one now he seems to have got used to his new ride not sure he will fit it in his chilly bin though. Sure he will try

They are in shallow too, same depth as puka an kings so atleast you wont go home empty handed!!
Yeah you would be the man to land a broadbill on a yak, shit your the man landing one on a boat!!

I'm sure I hooked a stickface while LBG off Brett, emptied my TLD25 like it was a reel of cotton. I reckon if you spend next summer bobbing around off there, you're bound to make it into the books.
I'll sit on the rocks throwing sandwiches to you every five hours and shouting encouragement

I'll have to hold you to your offer - a drift in close for resupply and a megaphone pep talk from someone lounging in a deck chair with a well supplied chillibin at arms reach...
It's a cool spot out there, but so far all my marlin baits have been "mako'd"

. It was at Brett I decided to change to smaller diameter fluorocarbon traces - durable enough at the line pressures we can exert, but easier for the marlin kayakers nemesis to "auto release" at a distance
