It's been pretty changeable weather here in Hawkes bay with lots of westerlies.
Finally a few days popped up with a good forecast and i had the gear packed and ready to go. It's been some months since i last fished north at tangoio due to the swell always blocking launching in this spot. today it was relatively calm apart from the odd big dumper threatening a turtle.

I got out offshore at 7am and made my way out to 16m where i sat to wait out the morning westerly which was gusting around a bit. The forecast said it was going to drop so i wasn't going to go any further unless it did. I caught a few kahawai and nothing else , very slow fishing.

After the wind glassed off i pulled the anchor and made my way out to 19 m where the water was nice and blue. Water temperatures are rising with my sounder reading just over the 15 degree mark on the new spot. More of the same slowness. There definitely wasn't a lack of fish as i could see them on the sounder refusing to bite. As with most of my days bite time was around late morning.. both rods went off with two excellent Gurnard to start the bin off.

It was really a patience game from here on out. I Chunked pilchards / kahawai to keep the fish interested and maybe tempt a large snapper into the trail to my waiting strayline bait.

After a few kahawai came through i had another double hookup

with two mid 40s being netted and i quickly put them onto ice.

the final fish of the day was a real good one. The grunter was in spectacular condition; weighing 1.2kg making her a new PB for me. She was fat from head to tail. 5 Flounder and 6 paddle crabs in her stomach, great to see the gurnard snacks are around.
