Hi just getting into kayak fishing, have been out a few times and last weekend got my 1st soft-bait setup. However, reading threads here and the beginner guides on www.fishing.net.nz got me thinking that I might have made a mistake and need to exchange the rod for something shorter 7'? I got the following and need your advice? Planning to go to F & H this weekend. SHADOW X NANO 7' 3-6KG?
Primary concerns are: Rod too long to retrieve the fish as I have to stretch really hard to get to the line. Being so close to the water I'll have to keep my arm very high, for the tip not to go to into the water.
Stradic 2500 ci4
2017 CN792SP36 -CATANA NANO 3-6KG 7'9" SPIN (http://www.shimanofishing.co.nz/product ... ifications)
Thank you all.
Is 7'9'' too long jak fishing?

I just bought an Ocean Angler Microwave. At 8ft, it just didn't feel right (personal preference). Strangely, I exchanged it for a SHADOW X NANO 7' 3-6KG which has been out on a couple of trips now.

Agree. Largely they are canal rods, will throw a light jig head (think 1/8 oz or less) a long way, but there's hell to pay in a kayak for that length.
You're aware that while it affords one the momentary illusion of satisfaction, the spewing of bile is never a permanent solution.

Its just the mathematics of them, they are gutless in the hook set and generally are a laggy rod. Someone in a magazine writes an article how awesome they are and then everyone wants one.

In a previous life, I was regularly using 11, or even 12ft rods for casting lures. There are some definite advantages in some situations, but they don't translate to yak fishing, or being afloat in general.

I had an 8' Tica rod for years - starting on shore, then moved to my kayak. I had no problems using it, caught plenty of fish with it, and was really quite annoyed when I broke it in a shallow turtle.awondering wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2017 7:56 amIts just the mathematics of them, they are gutless in the hook set and generally are a laggy rod.
