The last month has seen good results for us out here as long as you stick out the flurry of giant red cod and spiny dog sharks....there is a multitude of gurnard, snapper and kahawai to be had for the paitent angler.
I've even heard rumors of massive 50 cm+ blue cod being caught but ever so cautious am I after catching my first threser shark last weekend, what a beast of a fish being at least 2 meters long, grabbing my snapper I saw with net in hand and then he appeared and then peeled line of my little Penn baitfeeder.
Never mind five gurnard, couple good snapped and bait for next time, I will be back for a chance to nab that big one that is still eluding me.

sorry no real info for that side of the bay, apart from heading round the corner towards delaware is more productive for me.
once past the reef head towards durville n do a few drifts...

I've hooked a 2m+ thresher too , magnificent fish . Especially when they jump! Great catch on the eaters too. I've fished cable a couple times when i was down there. Caught all my gurnard on an orange lucanus just floating round the bay in about 20m

How'd everyone go in the weekend?

will be staying out at jacketts island over the weekend, so definetly be floating about somewhere.
if ya rod buckles over, reel starts screaming, disconnect ya anchor n enjoy the ride. good luck

Well have been using Jeff's choice of rig, I have no idea how he sets it up but I've made my own style and fish are jumping on with ease. Chose ruby bay instead of kina , arrived at 5 paddled out to 4 meters with a out going tide and within an hour (just after sunrise) had caught 8 mid 30s snapper, bites stopped and did not want to paddle deeper so called it a productive hour and headed home.
Have heard many productive rumours of the bLind channel behind tahunanui beach so thought it was time To try my luck and hit the spot last night (low tide on sunset). so hit it one hour before low tide and within that hour had five mid 30s snapper and my first trevally.
Productive weekend and fish for the family this week.

Ranson_3dm nice bro your slaying it.
Always wanted to try blind channel area but bit far to drive.
Did an overnighter at jacketts. launched next to mot marina n drifted down to the bach. popped out semi early sunday morn n met up with 'otha fulla'. It was really quiet fish wise, if you discount the kings smashing piper n large schools of macks. Water temp was reading 20deg wtf! so either my ff is on the blink or its risen 3.5deg in two weeks. Flicked a couple of poppers n stickbaits around but no interest and once i finally caught a livie kings seemed to have moved on. Trolled a lure over the weed beds on the way back to the bach but no joy. Lenny from coppins sports shop, was out fri morning n kept 7 of 9 in under two hours. Great guy for a yarn, fresh bait, tackle, n local intel if your passing thru mot.

Saw a couple of kingis when I was out ruby bay smashing the bait fish in my berly trail, only prob is that the family doesn't like kingi so focus on the edibles.
Sounds like a good time at jackets minus the fish =p.
Are you Mot based Pete?
Yeah am going to hit the channel again in the morning, heard of some 10 pounders getting nailed in there so here's hoping that my light gear gets a work out.

yeah mot based. when ive got a car mostly fish between ruby n patons rock (GB) with the occasional dabble at cable
fair enough not liking kingi. i love the wings smoked. not a fan of snapper or cod, so they go to the extended whanau. love kahawai but gurnard will always be number one for munching.
will catch up sometime next year once summer chaos is done

Went out to kina last night. And the temp on fish finder was 23 Pete. Like a warm bath on my legs. Heaps of small snapper about getting then on jig and bait prob caught about 15 and kept 2. Great fun.

Hi ranson.
I was pretty close in. In around 4 mtr of water. Just got to find a bit of structure/feature out there.
Where do you launch to fish the back beach at tahunanui? Any tips for fishing there?
Cheers.
