Hi all, this is my first TR....and it's different.
Got up 4.45am headed to my favourite spot Whangaruru Harbour, launched without incident from main beach.....water real filthy from storm and swell running.....could only catch 32cm fish which went back....tidal run with full moon very fast.

No fish kept, tried a 5 km radius nothing....gradually I'm heading into the open ocean between Oakura and Bland Bay, the swells out here are BIG and with the cliff-face backwash bouncing hundreds of meters out, the sea was a real upheaval with foam and debris everywhere, the water looked dirty even way out here...

Nothing was biting, so I paddle my new PF 400 closer to Bland Bay in search of dinner, ...I have no sounder fitted yet, but I know the area...... I'm on my own this trip, and nursing a torn tendon in my left arm, which reminds me every long paddle stretch..(I have full safety kit and ph,vhf, Plb and know my limits, I'm comfortable)

I'm at one of my better fishing spots, I catch one snap, then I start to think, why is everything so dead, I'm usually cautious fishing full moon tides as they tend to bring sharks on the bite as many plankton and baitfish come to the surface during that cycle.

Well right on cue here comes a beefy hammerhead, Ok...fine....I'm fishing baits so I move a way off...bingo another fin arrives....I look around me and can see other fins way in the distance...is this "Shark Week".....I'm feeling a little exposed here with so many sharks in heavy sea conditions, and not being in my bigger "reload".

Not catching, difficult seas and sharks, I'm heading back....along the way I pass my kingfish pinnacle, look across at the face of an oncoming swell and the are a bunch of sharks, buga...no it's not! it's one real big shark, it was the dorsal, pectoral and tail fin I saw....I quickly wind in my lure and scramble away.

Back towards Whangaruru in sheltered waters, I try to fish again, yup fish on...OH NO why me! in comes a real good size moray to finish my day off.

I head back pretty knackered after 9 hours in the wash....jump in my car, drive off nec minute there's a wasp flying around my face while I'm driving.....pull over sorted that.
Got home late, turned light on, bulb blew.

Um...please turn the bad karma switch off...lol

Good TR mate..... if all we posted were TRs about how awesome the fishing was, everybody would think that Yak fishing is a like a Matt Watson TV episode !! 25-30lbers and Marlin every time a bait hit the water !

^^ it's not like a fishing show?

Sharks through march are commonplace... they'll be gone in a month hopefully... bloody things. been some good hammers around lately.
