Great, now that I've successfully click-baited you in here. . .
I'm thinking of heading out for a bit of a paddle on Thursday, looks like the wind will die down a bit. I'm a 100% soft-bait virgin, but would like to give them a try.
Can anyone recommend a type/brand/color/shape that I should get to start with, also, what weight jig heads should I get to start with ?
I will likely be fishing Sullivans, just north of Auckland.
All advice appreciated!
Kayak fishing sucks, why would anyone do it ????

Certainly not one of the experts, but my ZMan New Penny has outfished all the others I've tried. I now permanently have that on one rod and will experiment with other SB on the other rod.

I'm a newbie too so can't really help on the lure front…. I am however keen to have a crack at Sullivan's and I'm free on Thursday AM. PM me if you're keen for a partner.

Scooter, how are you placed for Wednesday morning? I'm still pondering whether I hit the water tomorrow or Thursday. PM me your mobile number and we can arrange an attack via txt.Scooter wrote:I'm a newbie too so can't really help on the lure front…. If you're a total soft bait newbie, have a read of Paul Senior's article on "dragging". Caught me most of my Auckland fish. I would also recommend the Zman new penny curly tails, especially for dragging.

Re jig head weight go as light as you possibly can, I spent the first wee while stuck on using the same weight sorta regardless of the day, lazy fisher really. But since I started moving down in weight fishing results improved a fair bit. I started using genie clips as it's easy to swap jig heads and as my eyesight is letting me down found tying a rapala knot on the water harder going than it should be.. That's my 2 cents anyhow

Gulp 4 inch grubs any colour just drag around.
1/2 oz jighead 1/0 nitro type or 3/0 jigstar jigheads
Drogue to slow your drift.

Thanks for the detailed post piwikiwi. I ended up buying some gulp and z-man soft-baits as suggested here, but didn't seem to have much luck with them. I tried the drag method as per earlier post, but didn't get any action. I then went back to dragging around some squid and got a keeper on that at least.piwikiwi wrote:There is also a product called.....Gulp.

There were a fair few smaller fish around, returned at least 10 under size, all up it was a fantastic spot for kayaking.
