Decided early Wednesday this weather was too good to not miss a crack at trying out the new gear.

Quick phone call to the Boss and after I dropped the better half in at work, had the car and yak all packed up and ready to go at 8.30.

Stupid me though 30 min trip to Makara become an hour, I could've stayed home and enjoyed a cup of coffee and waited out the school traffic, unfortunately I'm a fool and rushed out, dodging psycho pregnant mothers in their people movers.

Arrived at Makara just short of 9.30 to find Cyclone Geta and Fehi had really destroyed any chance of an easy launch. Managed to carry everything to the shore line through knee deep seaweed wash.

No anchor, no bait, no burley decided to keep it simple with slow jigs and soft baits. Paddled out to some current to the left just off the submerged rock.

In 10 - 15m of water, nothing of any significance hanging out around on the sounder. Chucked on some squid vicious and 1/2 oz 3/0 Jigheads to see if I could get some greedy gut blue cod hanging on the bottom. 5m from the bottom something had my new stradic 4000 screaming, as I got the drag set I soon realised this was no cod or Bara, rod was noding away, and up came a good eating size snapper 45cm. Unfortunately I have a rule where the first one will always go back (superstitious <img src="./images/smilies/emoticon-0183-swear.gif" alt=":swear:" title="Swear"> has led to some good fish going back and going home fishless) , so he swam to live another day. An hour of some hot bites and some decent string pulling miss hooks I had 3 snapper in the bin and the biggest knocking on the door of 4kg. First season Kayak fishing and Im hooked.

I also need to invest in a fish cooler bag - Chilly bin wasnt big enough.
