I acquired a Phoenix Hornet as my first kayak last year – (thanks to Jason “Mental” for giving me a great deal) but haven’t thought of putting a TR as I’m sceptical that it’s not worth for one. So moving forward, my kid requested for a battered snapper fillet so went to fish after work (4pm) to my go to area in Whangaparaoa just 5 mins drive from home and just 500m paddle and planned to come back before dark. Caught 3 snappers after an hour averaging 35 cm and thinking this will be more than enough for tonight’s dinner and throw my last cast and was hit by 60cm KY and off the bin. Nice one for a bonus. Off the shore, heard some kids shouting and running around as they were surfcasting and saw some nice work-ups just around 200 meters from the shore and thinking, should try for a visit, so paddled to that area and dropped a softie but there were no takers. It’s already 5:30pm and thinking missus will be at home before 6:00pm so did call it a day and dropped a lure and paddled back to the shore. After few paddles, I felt that my lure got snagged on something, so tried to retrieve it and buggered that it’s another weed/reef snag issue (3m depth) but to my surprise, it was moving. It was vicious and thinking this should be a another big KY but it just went straight and dragged me & the yak. After 15 mins of fighting, I was stoked when I saw this Kingi appeared which was only a dream – lol, the problem was on how will I retrieve it as I don’t have a gaf and my net was just a tiny ones for an average snapper. Tried to use the net on kingi’s face and hold down the tail to pull it up and quickly measured it using the red plastic 30 cm ruler and was surprised that I got a legal one since it measured more than X 2.5 on the ruler (around 80cm+). Now the problem is that, I arrived at home late (6pm) and saw the missus with the terror face when I arrived but changed when she saw the Kingi. Measured it again and it was 85cm. Great bonus for a quick snapper fishing.
