The bits sticking out of the mould making it look like a hedgehog are for some of the 136 brass inserts that will be fused inside the plastic hull. They allow all the additonal fixtures to be screwed on rather than having to be rivetted, which requires holes to be drilled through the hull first. Imagine 136 holes.

The insert are stronger, more durable and totally water proof. Naturally it adds some weight and cost but having had leaking and broken rivets in the past I am in no doubt this is a small price to pay for the overall benefits of this system.

I've answered (given an opinion) the same question you posted in the other thread:

http://www.kayakfishingnz.com/forum/vie ... &start=120

Not that I'm a moderator, but in my humble opinion, posting the same question in two different threads is not helpful. You aren't particularly doing any damage with a simple question, but if the same question is answered by different people at the different threads, you'll make it difficult for people who are interested in your questions/opinions to find all the opinions and answers.

EDIT: Rainbow, mate that is priceless.   Also, suprisingly to the point... ;)

methesda wrote:There are a couple of good choices for after-market Sail add-ons for kayaks, with proven designs. I'm sure this is one side of the story.

The other side, is that I have formed the impression that most would prefer not to have a sail, which would constitute a pretty poor market. I could be wrong, but I believe most like to have their decks as clear as possible for fear of tangles, and, for the money spent on some folks kayaks one could easily buy a small laser or cat, or even a rigid-hull inflatable. A kayak isn't supposed to be sailed by default - the fact that a person can is just one more notch in their tally of coolness.

I simply think that coupling these two factors together, i don't believe many kayak manufacturers would want to get into the Kayak Sail Market. I would expect an actual sail company to try it first.
