Otago region discussions, for local trips, meetings etc.

so on thursday the forecasts were all 1/10 from dunners up to oamaru and i had an install in herbert, so in the intrests of science i took the scenic route and checked out how the bays looked in this un-paddleable condition.

for the most part the only thing that was offputting was the wind. the swell didnt look that big, the surf wasnt up and it was cloudy with sunny times.

most of the headlands with a good leeward side looked damn tempting for a swim or paddle.

so i am left wondering how many good days on the water are missed and is there a better way to check for yourself short of driving out?

i am inclined to just read the swell heights and direction then browse google maps for an area that should be sheltered as the boating forecasts look terrible for xmas period and i want to get out.
