Post Testing the water.
For some of us it has been a pretty indifferent season. For me personally , it has been an emotional roller coaster, with both the elation of a new ,and more fulfilling job , late in my working life , and the joys of an overseas trip with family , to the crushing blows that one of us has been stricken with a life threatening disease. My daughter has now been cleared of cancer , but still has to face chemotherapy & radiation treatment. Her resolve has been truly inspiring, and as a parent , when this sort of thing happens its hard to rationalise the situation .
All sorts of emotions arise , and I guess the saying , "if it doesn't kill you , it makes you stronger ", is a good philosophy to go by .
One of the things that has helped keep me afloat so to speak is the chance to throw the yak into the sea , and go for a paddle, not just to fish but also to unwind , and face the elements , fishing has been a bonus !
Having unloaded that I'm still keen to hold a mid winter get together to introduce new kayakers to the sport & to reunite with other yakkers , be they fishermen ,divers or paddlers . Do we have any takers? The mid winter thing has been popular in the past , so can we do it again ?
Give me a heads up , and I will start the ball rolling , some new ideas for a meeting , a cool venue , whatever ... bring it on !

Hey Herman... certainly sounds like a heck of a year for you. You will be looking forward to a less stressful year ahead. Keen for a catch up what did you have in mind? Also looking at going out this weekend if weather forecast stays looking goodish. Will probably aim for around TA... hopefully the snapper are still around. Anyone been out in the last week? Cheers

Good to hear from you Bruce . I don't have a specific plan for the weekend , but I'm aiming to make kayak fishing a priority , either day , or both . I guess the weather is the governing factor , but keen to have a look at TA or Clifton. The Port hasn't been so kind to me in recent trips , but its about a month since I was even on the water, ( yeah I know , pathetic ,eh!) . Morning trips will be the priority , before the breeze kicks in . I've got a heap of bait if you you guys want some , Anchovies , that the penguins don't want ! they are fussy little shits , penguins , so there is a huge waste factor . Anyway if you want some let me know . Cheers , Herman.

Come have a look at clifton herman and bruce, 1 $ entry through the camp gate , well worth the fish hanging around the area , easy launch too :y: Forecast is improving by the day, Got a plan to stray-line some baits for the big snapper!

That Bait offer sounds very good Herman.. I am not as fussy as penguins. Re activity perhaps a guided kayak tour thru the national aquarium? Weekends starting to look better... Sunday is my pick for the day.. though tomorrow may be marginal/doable at TA/Clifton too. Blair when you say an easier launch their is it better than the normal TA launch area. Do you use the boat ramp and is the club ok about that? Cheers

Hey bruce,

I have launched at the clifton club most of this season now. We don't launch off the main ramp. If your on the beach to the right of the marine club with low swell its easy as! It's a shorter paddle to deeper water also. Structure on the bottom is more around there too.

Safe parking in there , public access. $1 donation to get through the gate at the front of the camp when its early morning. Even got a hose to clean some gear off! Just drive through the camp and your'll end up past the marine club and in a carpark.

I'll be there Sunday Forecast is 0.3m swell 6knots of wind so looking good

The Clifton option sounds good Blair , so I think I will launch there Sat morning , conditions permitting , and if my fishing mojo is still pumping I will look at Sunday too. Will get some bait organised for you Bruce . Cheers H , and the Aquarium tour sounds very do-able, good idea , I will work on it .

The swell is going to halve over night nearly 0.6 its what its supposed to be. That southerly has brought the cold water and the spinies in at the port, It's well worth a shot at clifton 16-17 degrees is still fine for the snapper, i got them last year mid may so it shouldn't be an issue. I also want a gurnard haven't caught one all year! See you guys there in the morning i'll be on the water before 7!

Did you get out you two ? Caught and released 20+ legal snapper 5 Kahawai and some Trevally, The spinies are back so had to deal with them between desirable species all over a metre and bastards to unhook as usual. Kept 5 Snapper and a Trev. All a short paddle from Clifton

Hey Hawk,
Been a while since i've seen you on the water.
The bags like that have become the norm for me i've learnt the area , currently on the search for bigger fish. I know they are there. Also trying to learn where i can catch gurnard as i want some to eat.

Adding to that two kayakers in scramblers went out after you came in bruce, they went out further into the bay into clearer water, they picked up two large trevally 45cm + along with some 35cm size snapper. And only 1 spiny! Dirty water was my issue with the spinies i think. I wanted to be out further towards 6-7m but i had no-one with me so i stayed closer to shore

I'm always trying to get out, but when I do, it's often just a paddle, so nothing to report on. Life gets in the way when you have a family, house, and plenty of other hobbies :) I'm sure there'll be a time soon when it will all come together again.
In the meantime, I just read lots of (mostly) good reports!
