Hey guys,
Just wondering if any of you tie you own flies?
I bought a vice yesterday and tied my first fly lastnight :)
I was realy impressed with how it came out, so will try a few more tonight.
So yea just wondering whose doing it, and what your doing?

Have the gear but haven't done any tying in years. Mostly used to do unorthodox patterns that I thought matched what the trout were eating, 'crab' nymphs for the flounder and flasher rigs. I grew up on a deer farm with lots of game birds and small furry creatures, so I had plenty of material to try out.

Can't help I'm afraid, all my flies are either zipped or buttoned.
Taken out of context, you're leaving yourself wide open there Chris, so to speak

I've been tying my own flashers for a while (no jokes about flys and flashers please) and they are pretty successful. Fun to do to. I don't have a special vice but I've bodged up my own system using a G clamp and bits and pieces. Spotlight can be a good place for material but the chicks give ya funny looks. (Again, no jokes about flashers.)

I got it from rod and reel, whole set including vise, bobbin, bobbin threader, pick, and hack holder cost me a grand total of $19 ;)
They have 50% off tying kits at the moment.
I then bought a few supplies swell so spent a bit more on that stuff, but the tools were cheap as considering a salt water fly will run ya anywhere up to about $9 a piece.

Hi Chris
You planning on doing FW or SW flies or both???? Like some others I just use my fly tying kit for making up flashers and even for FW hooks now as most commercially made ones have way to much on them (IMO). FW flies are an art form and given my all fingers and thumbs capability, I'll just use my local guy who will make whatever I want and he is cheaper than the shop sold ones. I have also come accross a guy on Trademe who makes good flies and very cheap. If you need details let me know. Was thinking about having a freshwater session sometime up here, perhaps going fresh one day and then getting all salty the next day :worried: How about we do a kinda Surf and Turf (Trout) week end up this way with forum and NKFC members???????
Cheers
Karl

hi Chris,

I've made a few hare and copper nymphs up in the past... just about the easiest fly to create.
They are my first choice as far as fly fishing goes.

Hey Chris.. Me and the Old boy have tied for years both for personal and for commercial. The first thing you are going to want to change is the vice :D especially tying SW flies. double that price and then add a zero if your thinking of taking it seriously :D

If you get stuck on anything flick me a PM and I will see what I can help out with.
