Does anyone have any experience in painting fibreglass?

I like to repaint my kayak as it is great and rare to find new in NZ. It looks perfect on the water and I have recieved so many compliments but the red colour looks a bit faded when off the water. I have done little reading and found interlux two part epoxy might be the right option.

1st need to find out what colour suits and lasts best, might even try to paint over the Gelcoat, exploring possibilities right now

Dont you mix the colour in the gel coat and paint that on? Might even make it a bit stronger so you dont have to look for nice sandy beaches to land on all the time. Sounds like you need to send it to Winchs mancave for a weekend.

Just give it a cut and polish with a compound that you will get from your local fibreglass shop, It will come up like new :y: Dont paint it and never try and change the colour :y:

On your next kayak stay away from dark colours like black, dark blues and greens and all reds all are bad for uv damage, orange is good :y: keep it light and always get a white hull :y: use stickers for hi vis things

What about a vinyl wrap? Yes it would be temporary(ish) and not sure of the surface coefficient, but could be an easy way to try a new colour/pattern.

I use a cut and polish on my hull for minor scratches and scuffs - works very well.

There's also a UV protectant, Aerospace 303 which is supposed to be the dogs wotsits, makes the yak as slippery as snot to pick up though

And I have a black boat, with a black hull....Doomed.

Definitely Cut and Polish is the way to go. Any vintage car buff (No pun intended but what the hell  ) will tell you it is the best way to restore the original colour. Most of the dullness will just be oxidation of the surface paint. Underneath will be nice shiny paint.
Simple is as simple does.

This is a reply I received from the Mirage factory in Australia, makes me wonder :?:

Hi Ali,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. No problem painting over the gelcoat. Obviously you will need to remove all the hardware.

I would recommend you use either two pack enamel ( auto paint) or a marine polyurethane, also a two part mix. Personally I would go with the two pack enamel.

You can spray straight over the gelcoat with no need for a primer. I would rub it back wet (take the shine off completely) with 800 wet & dry sandpaper. Dust will be you biggest enemy but you can rub it out of the finish coat with 1500 wet & dry, then buff a shine back onto it.

You should be able to source new deck rope & shock cord locally, if not, we could help from this end.

Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any issues.

Good luck with restoration.

Regards

I have re-painted a couple of boats and just about to do the caravan. The prep isn't hard but it's tedious and it takes time. The actual painting requires the right gear and skills to do a good job, but doesn't actually take that long.

I always do the prep myself but pay a professional to do the actual painting.
