Those of you that have had or used more than one, I'd love ta know which you preferred and why ya changed it. Thinking about getting a mid-range one. It has ta be easy to use, do it's job well, and handle the tough treatment I give all my gear.

Eagle Cuda 350...mid price range (aorund $500 ??)...B&W, but gave me both the GPS and FF functionality. Mapping functionality VERY basic and you cant download /update the maps.......BUT, I find it perfectly adequate for what I want.....

I use a humminbird, but also have a garmin (currently in for repair).
Both great units, but the humminbird has a much better resolution.

I can't remember how many sounders I've personally used now, but have had excellent results from Lowrance, Eagle, and Humminbird. I like the information I get off my Humminbird 798 and the way it allows me to actually hunt fish in depths out to 150m (will read much deeper). I do have a new addition to the family I have to stay :x about at the moment, but lets just say I can now spot bait fish in 400m and theoretically still find the ocean floor at 1,000m, but I haven't paddled far enough yet to find out

Garmin 300c. Previously owned a Cuda 168 and reckon that bang for buck the Garmin is better.
Why? sunstrike, my sensitive eyes and a Black/grey screen don't mix. I prefer colour (also great for night fishing). Resolution not so good though but does the trick.

Haven't got one and mostly have thought perhaps don't need one because I usually catch good fish anyway. Recently have wished I could see what the bottom looked like. $159 for a Cuda 300 at Marine Deals looks good.

Which leads me ta ask: What basic features does a usable fish finder need ta have to make worth while having? I looking a get my first one too. Don't have a lot of money to through at it, but don't want ta waste money on a Fish Finder that doesn't do the job I need it to do.
1 - It's got to be waterproof as it's going on the Yak.
2 - It's got to be easy ta use.
3 - It's got ta tell fish from bottom.
4 - Depth indication is a must.
5 - Water temp at different Depths would be a plus.
6 - GPS would be a plus.
7 - It's own Rechargeable Battery pack (or at less a place to put them in) that would last a day's fishing would be handy (means less wires and no lead acid batt needed).
8 - Must be under $500 or I can't afford it.
