I've fished several Kms of the Tuki Tuki and also yakked on lake Taupo.
The river fishings great as you get to cover a lot of water that you would otherwise not have access to. I have really enjoyed spending a whole day on the river, though its often taken a lot longer time to cover the distance I'd planned to cover for the day.
I've not had any success in the trout stakes at Taupo, yet.

I use kayaks to access fishing and hunting on the likes of the upper Mohaka (chopper the yaks in and exit at the Taupo/Napier Highway bridge), and periodically chase trout on the lakes from Taupo to Kai Iwi (north of Dargaville). Great fun but also something to do when it's too rough to hit the salt. Also teaches new respect for fishing with lures - if you can fool a trout the salt water specie are easy!
