How long in the freezer?

So... I forgot about a bag of snapper fillets in the freezer since march. Think they'll be ok for a chowder or pie? Whats the general consensus on shelf life for frozen snapper fillets?

They'll be fine in terms of not making you unwell, but don't think they'll be up to much in terms of texture and flavour, so a pie is a good idea. We've only just got through last summer's albacore!

As an aside, we're making an effort not freeze fish which means being more selective about what I bring home, eating lots of fish and fishing more! None of those are bad things.

I never freeze any fish for myself. Fresh is best.

I did hear someone say that a month in the freezer makes the fish a day older. Not sure how true this is.

I turn my old fish into thai fish cakes they go into a food processor with heaps of spices have eaten frozen fish to a year old get better at limiting what you keep , struggle with this myself trying now to only keep a couple of fish unless you've got someone who wants fish . Good way to justify going fishing if there's nothing in the freezer

The fillets are typically eaten within days, although I freeze and vacuum pack the heads and backbones for work lunches. That can take up to a week to eat. I haven't noticed any difference in taste.

Nothing wrong with fresh 'frozen' fish in my opinion. Needs to be done right though. Fish cooled down as they are caught, vacuum sealed and frozen asap, slow thaw (24 hours in the fridge). And eaten within 3 months. If done right its hard to tell the difference between fresh and frozen, unless you are a Gordon Ramsey wannabe! ;)

No food safety issues. But there may some quality issues.

Most fish if iced and kept cold until vac packed and frozen the quality is very good, and people can't tell it from very fresh fish in blind testing. I freeze fish because I tend to fish less often and catch more fish, when I do.

I think catching and cooking fish the same day adds to the enjoyment of eating it, and there is no way to replicate that.

Not quite March but I'm still smoking bits of Kingfish from a few months back and they come out fine :)

Smoking absolves many sins :)

I have a load of winter trout in the freezer, wonderful when smoked :inlove:
