The GoPro Hero 5 camera will be available soon. It's waterproof to 10 metres without a housing and can be controlled by voice commands, features that will definitely be of interest to kayakers (and jetskiers!).

About time tbh. Hopefully the battery life is a bit longer as well vs the 4. and hopefully they ut some thought into being able to charge while in use for constant recording

Yup, charge while in use is a big one. I thought of drilling a hole and permanently mounting a cable to my non-GP camera's watrrproof casing. Would render it non-waterproof, but should be fine for splashing while mounted on the yak.

Battery life seems to be around 2 hours which is OK. Looking at the hardware, although charging in use would be possible, it wouldn't be waterproof, so back to the drawing board on that one.

Induction charging seems like a sensible approach to waterproof charging.

A few people have done similar things on YouTube. I considered it at one stage, but the thought of editing 6 hours plus of footage put me off!

That's not a problem with the new camera though eh? with voice command you can
A: tell it to record on demand
B: tell it to highlight a selection etc and it put's markers in the footage making it easy to find.

It sounds like it removes the need for WiFI which was the biggest downer to them and the battery it guzzled.
I have a few mates with them already so will see how they find that side of the functionality before I jump into more cameras for the boat.
