thinking of an upgrade from the elite 4x and as i quite like the compact size of the unit was lookin at the new chirp with slightly bigger screen.
am i best to go for the chirp model that does not have the chartplotter or is it worth spending the extra and going for the combo?
or does anyone have other recomendations for an upgrade?

I would say go for the charts if:
a) You regularly fish out of district, or
b) You haven't fully explored your neighbourhood yet

If you have regular haunts and seldom 'explore' for want of a better word, I'd say you probably don't need the chart

i do go out of district but is it enough to justify the extra $$ i wonder.
Prob not as do enjoy going out in regular and new areas, just drifting and seeing what is down there so will prob go with the new chirp 4 to give me clearer picture over the 4x
