I have a spot it updates my position to an Internet site and can be set to update location from 5 minutes to one hour. You have to pay a yearly fee but the family can see where I am at all times on the link which is on their phones and computer. Has per set messaging and emergency button if required. Easy to use waterproof and I take it with me all the time. I get use out of it as well as the piece of mind that help is there if I need it.

Personally, I would (and did) go for PLB.

Yes I'm with you there Mike, I'd get the PLB first for the safety point of view then I'd look at a Spot second, good for tracking, people back home being able to keep updated as to where you are - last minute change of launch location, why you aren't back when you said you'd be 'cause you are still on the water, and of course knowing when to start making your lunch/dinner for your return
