Re: 10 Knots Zero Swell Conditions

I use Windy. I've only had to go home once due to the conditions being quite a bit worse than the prediction. Thursday is looking a bit crap at this stage, worth keeping an eye on it though as it can change. I've fishing NN A LOT in the last 3 years My personal rule of thumb is once it goes past 20k...

Re: Kayaker's in trouble.

Ok I reread the story and I was a bit hard on them.

Seems the weather turned really bad quicker than the forecast predicted.

Good to see they were well prepared and it turned out well.

Re: Kayaker's in trouble.

*&^% fools went out in conditions the rescue helicopter couldn't even take off in.

If it's over 20km, I don't even consider going out, and I consider myself experienced.

If you do nothing else safety wise, CHECK THE DAMN FORECAST!

Re: Narrow Neck!

Never fish "in" the channel.

Either drift alongside it, or try closer in along the Takapuna cliffs etc.

This is handy for a beginner:

Re: Narrow Neck!

It sucks, don't fish there! ;) But seriously - there is good parking right next to the ramp (if you get there early) and a huge car-park just across the road if you get there late. Not many boats launch there as the bigger Takapuna ramp is close by. And it's a shorter paddle to the harbor end of the...

Re: NN - 19/05 Pre-winter fish.

Agree on the bendy tip. I use an OA Bender rod. https://www.marine-deals.co.nz/ocean-angler-powerflex-bender-slow-jig-rod-6ft-3in-140g-1pc When it comes to sliders I do nothing, literally nothing. I let the slider hit the bottom, wind it up a little, stick it in the rod holder and don't touch it. No...

NN - 19/05 Pre-winter fish.

Snuck out for a quick one before winter.

Looks like the gurnard are starting to come in already.

Orange slider was all business, soft-baiting was slow.

Was really quiet on the water, hardly a kayak or boatie out there.

Re: NN - 08/05. We're back.

I made a hybrid lure which has been kicking ass for a while now. You get a OA Flea or Catch Pocket rocket and take the hook off. Then use the split ring to connect it to a OA Jelly Baby. Out fishes everything else I use. I cast it on my soft-bait rod and jig it on my jigging rod. If you want KY, jus...

NN - 08/05. We're back.

Well the forecast was for more than 1 knot of wind so everyone stayed in bed like pussies. It was actually a nice day with a perfect drift, not too fast, not too slow. Hit the water just before 6am, and it was slow going at first. But once the sun shown a few rays - BANG! 7 Snapper and 3 KY in no ti...

It's going to be interesting to see what the fishing is like.

It had been a bit shit this year up to the lock-down.

Re: No fishing

I'd like to be able to go to the coastguard page and register to 'opt out' of being rescued.

I'll buy a special headband or something for $20 to support them even.

Then I can go out, not feel guilty, and rely on myself.

Re: Orere Point - the tried and true

Awesome catch bro!

I've gone 100% to Z-mans due to gulps constantly getting their tails nibbled off and costing a fortune.

Some Chinese company needs to copy Gulp's formula and sell the things for about 20% of the current cost.
