How not to surf

I know it is bad taste but I could not resist. These photos show when not to cross a bar. Yes it is a dangerous bar, but near low tide when the flow is still going out with a 4m plus swell running and an off shore wind to stand the waves up. Yep, one dead and a couple badly shaken. You have to wonde...

Sinking Feeling

I guess this is a good reason never to leave a hatch open on the water. Sounds like it may have been open while trying to pull up the anchor?

Can not sleep. Been up a while. Got to wait to meet up with my team. 30min to go :)
Old fishing line I have been told since arriving in Taranaki 6 years ago.
"Out by 7 back by 11."
Currently about 2 knots of wind. Very excited!

Re: Taranaki Classic 2013

Nakiman. Technical is showing signs of being on Steroids. I think there must be a rule about performance enhancing substances. He will have an unfair advantage like a sail or a motor. Maybe he should be challenged in court.

Kiwi K. No wind here mate. Below 10 knots does not count as wind. Here is a helpful website of actual conditions at port Taranaki.

Re: fishfinder glitch or huge fish/whale under the yak...?

We were on a boat with a very expensive colour sounder. While anchored with a pod of whales feeding around us we saw a huge black oval pass under us a couple of times, but the bottom still stayed the same, I guess due to it being a whale the sounder still got some signal back around the whale to ind...

Re: New DIY Kayak Builds

Foam can be machine milled or hand shaped. It gives some thickness between two layers of glass or carbon to add massively to overall stiffness, a lot of motor boats are built this way.

Re: New DIY Kayak Builds

I'm keen to build one. Anyone know of any CAD drawings of kayaks so I can cheat and cut out all the panels on my home built CNC. Keen to build about a 4.3m SOT. Either glass over ply or glass/carbon fibre over foam.

Re: Biteless in Bell Block

Its my local and its dead. The last 3 times nothing. No snapper in the usual places, no kahiwai on the surface, no birds and the most likely reason NO current. ??? Time for a drive me thinks.

Re: How Much? Eat or Give?

I give a lot away to those who can't catch/buy fish. They love it and my favourite is to give supper fresh fish to people who don't like fish and watch them change there mind. Some people think fish and chip fish is how it should be. They don't like the smell. But as you all know, iced fresh fish do...

Re: Profish 400 fittings question

I agree with Idealizedredesign. I to attach my home made rod and paddle leashes to my seats as you can see in the photo. Two to each side gives me 3 rods and the paddle. I have the same on my 14 year olds seat but also a sheaved knife on his seat. Then when we take the seat off to wash all the rod l...

Re: Kayak bouyancy

Jeff, for me the extra buoyancy is all about the final safety. It is not about primary safety. I fish on my own mostly and it is if all else fails. ie. my kayak leaks again to a point i can not paddle it. The extra buoyancy means it floats like a big life ring. I would challenge Mental and Limitless...

Re: Kayak bouyancy

As someone who has also had that sinking feeling I will add: It was a manufactured fault from new. I was out on my own like I often am. I was 2km out anchored and fishing when I realised. There was a 1.5m swell, buy the time I got halfway home it was hard to stay on the kayak, as every time a swell ...

Re: Maiden voyage

I fish 8-18m. I pick a direction and paddle. I stop when one of these gets me excited. 1. The sounder tells me it "believes" fish to be under me. 2. Kahiwai on the surface. 3. Current lines if all else fails. Forget about depth! I have been fishing in 4m just north of the reef and back toward the be...

Re: Maiden voyage

vr4king, paddle straight out off the ramp aiming for the right hand edge of the reef. Then about 50m before the reef turn right 45 degrees and paddle out past the reef. I can use this method to safely go in and out in 2m plus swells. Just never return at high tide with a swell running. The back wash...

Re: Maiden voyage

Well done.
I went off BB at about 9:30am. I was in 8m of water.
4 small keepers and a 640mm snapper
7 good sized Kahiwai most put back.
1 eel
3 small Blue Cod
4 sharks to 2m long.
So a very active morning, bring on the summer schools. It was dead calm at about 12. Not a bad day at all.

Re: Rod Leashes

Great looking leashes DJ. Just a hint. I have stopped purchasing expensive stainless steel or brass clips. Just take the loop the clip was going to be attached to and slip it over the front seat clip or even better use the same knot as DJ has on his clip but put it straight onto the seat clip. Then ...
