Re: The fishing in HB over the last few months

No doubt you're an accomplished kayak fisho now :y: Also wondering the identification of stripy fish? That would be a red banded perch. Took me a bit of searching to find out what it was. Part of the grouper family. I'm getting there andrew, ticked off the big snap like you said after the kingfish....

Mahia Peninsula Mixed Species Carnage

The first thing that comes to my mind when talking about Mahia would be ‘paradise’ or ‘happy place’. While travelling down the country from Whitianga to Napier.. the weather gods decided today was the day. Barely a breath of wind in the forecast. Bugger all swell. Get. Me. On. The. Water. The fishing in HB over the last few months

Have to say this Winter / Spring has been my best one of my kayak fishing career. so many good species caught, and many released. Seen a few of you out there but would love to see more ! The warm water is here because of this stinking hot weather it's kicked the fish right into gear. Dust those yaks...

Papa Aroha Get Together 2019 !

After a long winter of spiny dogs, some warmer water was very needed for me. With the Rob Fort Coromandel get together this would be my chance to ditch the cold and fish the coromandel for the first time in 10 years. After a 7 hour trip up from Hawkes Bay we arrived to Coromandel town and dropped in...

Gurnard PB 9th October

It's been pretty changeable weather here in Hawkes bay with lots of westerlies. Finally a few days popped up with a good forecast and i had the gear packed and ready to go. It's been some months since i last fished north at tangoio due to the swell always blocking launching in this spot. today it wa...

Re: wake up

The bay is overflowing with Gurnard at the moment, (one on the right was 1.2kg) These ones from a trip out from tangoio. have been catching them all winter. Water temp of 15 degrees yesterday. and best part 0 spinies, the sun has kicked them out. I've also had multiple Tarakihi and Blue Cod , so a v...

Gurnard, Tarakihi and Blue Cod Mixed Bag

It's about time the wind settled down.. definitely long overdue for a kayak mission. The forecast was great for the entire day, so i made a plan to head out to pania reef first thing. The car was frozen in the morning so it was a cold start. Luckily it had warmed from 0 to a warm 4 degrees at launch...

Port Report Sunday July 22

It was a good turn out on sunday with 3 other kayakers fishing on a fairly warm winters day out from the port. Rex who i haven't seen in a while was giving it a crack near the breakwater and a couple others were giving it a go. There was quite a bit of swell (1.3m) so it was up and down on the water...

The Gurnard are still at the port

Quite a paddle into some deeper water ( 16m + ) this past weekend found me some red gold. Got two from three on small swimming mullet soft-baits. These are the biggest Gurnard i've had all season, with all them over 800g and the biggest going 950g / 46cm. One spiny on a bait but other than that, no ...

Re: Monster PB Snapper and Gurnard

I remember how stoked i was with that one all those years ago pete. Since 2015 the snapper fishing has got better every year. as to why, the commercial fishos stay out of the breeding grounds voluntarily each summer now. I haven't really changed much in my rig, but i have fished a lot more and have ...

Monster PB Snapper and Gurnard

Just a typical session , i went out from my usual spot with very little swell. Gurnard have been on fire lately and i had the plan to catch a few for dinner. At 8am i had my ledgers on the bottom with bullet tuna for bait. I caught a kahawai which i despatched and cut up for some fresh bait. The fra...

Re: Tongoio Kayak Snapper Madness - 27 April

More Photos.. A few things to note... The lack of Kingfish and Gurnard. Both of which were the target species! I fished live mackerel all day to no avail on the Kingfish. No Gurnard turned up in my chunk trail either! One funny thing was my John Dory was totally blind in one eye, and had no pupil wh...

My Biggest ever Snapper - 27 April

Today's plan was to target Kingfish and Gurnard. I had seen some being caught on the beaches so I thought a few would be hanging around still. I got on the water nice and early at 6.30 and began searching for some baitfish. After making it off the front of the flat rock. I found the bait and caught ...

Easter Weekend

Bit of an update for you all out there. TA was the choice for the weekend and around 7 kayakers made there way out from the beach. Everyone caught some nice Snapper, Trevally, Kahawai and there was even a Kingie caught. I spent my morning trying straylining for the first time and began to hook onto ...
