Re: They are out there

I have been experimenting with soft-plastics and also inchikus. I'm not sold on their fish catching potential over bait just yet. So mostly just dirty old ledger rigs.

Epic Spring session on Snapper, Trevally and Gurnard

Any time i see abnormally warm weather shooting for the east coast i'm onto planning a trip to see what i can produce. Winter has been tough this year with temperatures hovering just above 13 degrees. Spiny Dogfish have been ruling the turf so much that i gave up for a month. After a 29 degree octob...

They are out there

Spring has well and truly sprung and bumped up the water temperatures. As per usual with the first week of october, the snapper turned up after a long winter hiatus. I wasn't after one this big but what can you do ? :D Caught a nice mixed bag of Trevally and Gurnard too. Kingfish won't be far away.

Re: Retirement Fishing

Over the past few months thats pretty much what i've been getting . 1 or 2 gurnard with a heap of spinies between. Really annoyed at the port for putting in a dumb wall just so we can't launch from breakwater beach. It puts on about 1.5km to a trip for us. I look forward to some of your post retirem...

Level 3 Lockdown close to shore yak fishing

Since kayak fishing is allowed in level 3 : as long as you stay close to shore , go out in safe weather and are within your limits (Directly quoting the govt site here) I have been out twice in the last few weeks. Even though i haven't been able to fish my usual spots, Just a short paddle out from n...

Taranaki Kayak Classic 2020

Once again, the Taranaki Classic rolls around for another year. This event is a must-do for all levels of kayak fishers. This would be my 5th year competing in the contest. With the weather looking good for the weekend me and dad got the gear together and set off on the 6 hour drive to New Plymouth....

Re: Launching the Yak in Napier.

It's a mess at the port. It's all being slowly closed in to make way for the new wharf. I have been launching off breakwater beach by taking the yak down on its wheels through basically an obstacle course. My trailer and car barely fit in the parks out on the road. I launch here whenever the swells ...

Re: Turangi New Years - Kayak Fishing Taupo Lakes

Do you find the two rear rod holders tip the kayak if you hook onto a decent size fish? And do you use them for trolling? I haven't seen them on the rear of a yak before, I have two up next to my fish finder on the tackle pod which i find handy Those rod holders i use for when on anchor either live...

Turangi New Years - Kayak Fishing Taupo Lakes

2019 was a very good year for me with many pbs smashed out of the kayak. With the year coming to a close it was once again time to head up to the Taupo region for a break from it all. Every time I stay at ‘the Bach’ with a bunch of family friends. This is a short walk away from the Omori stream mout...

Re: Port Bout Ramp Closure

I was expecting to be kicked out if i tried putting my trailer in that corner. I fished friday and launched from the beach and parked out on the road. Good that there's still room for my trailer. Lots of kingfish about too guys picked a few up on jigs

Has anyone raised any concerns to them yet?

Maybe we could petition for a personnel gate to the ramp? I presume the carpark will stay open.
I'm fairly certain the whole lot is going to be converted into a new shipping wharf which they will need the space for.

Re: Port Bout Ramp Closure

They have slowly been edging closer and closer. even the last time they put in new carparks. there is a new wharf going in which i don't exactly agree with since they will dredge out a shit ton of fish nurseries along with making the water vis even worse. The only hope is that we get some parking ne...

Re: The fishing in HB over the last few months

No doubt you're an accomplished kayak fisho now :y: Also wondering the identification of stripy fish? That would be a red banded perch. Took me a bit of searching to find out what it was. Part of the grouper family. I'm getting there andrew, ticked off the big snap like you said after the kingfish....

Mahia Peninsula Mixed Species Carnage

The first thing that comes to my mind when talking about Mahia would be ‘paradise’ or ‘happy place’. While travelling down the country from Whitianga to Napier.. the weather gods decided today was the day. Barely a breath of wind in the forecast. Bugger all swell. Get. Me. On. The. Water. The fishing in HB over the last few months

Have to say this Winter / Spring has been my best one of my kayak fishing career. so many good species caught, and many released. Seen a few of you out there but would love to see more ! The warm water is here because of this stinking hot weather it's kicked the fish right into gear. Dust those yaks...

Papa Aroha Get Together 2019 !

After a long winter of spiny dogs, some warmer water was very needed for me. With the Rob Fort Coromandel get together this would be my chance to ditch the cold and fish the coromandel for the first time in 10 years. After a 7 hour trip up from Hawkes Bay we arrived to Coromandel town and dropped in...

Gurnard PB 9th October

It's been pretty changeable weather here in Hawkes bay with lots of westerlies. Finally a few days popped up with a good forecast and i had the gear packed and ready to go. It's been some months since i last fished north at tangoio due to the swell always blocking launching in this spot. today it wa...

Re: wake up

The bay is overflowing with Gurnard at the moment, (one on the right was 1.2kg) These ones from a trip out from tangoio. have been catching them all winter. Water temp of 15 degrees yesterday. and best part 0 spinies, the sun has kicked them out. I've also had multiple Tarakihi and Blue Cod , so a v...
