Skunked at Waihi

Paddled out from the beach and round the headland north at sun up. It was grey and raining, but not too much in the way of wind. Fish Finder decided not to fire up so was firing blind, but covered the 2 bays north of Waihi without a single nudge on the SB or micro jigs. Headed in 11AM feeling very c...

Has any tried... Horizontal Jigging from a Yak?

https://www.nzfishingworld.co.nz/posts/horizontal-jigging I guess this is the same as pitching an over-sized Micro Jig ahead of the drift and working it really vigorously back to the boat? Was thinking the angle might make it a bit easier than stick baiting from a seating position so could use a lig...

Re: Waihi and surrounding areas

Cheers for that. I guess there are options to drive back over to the Thames side or further North if the wind is not playing ball - it's a couple hours away isn't it? Scooter, best end North, of beach, straight off surf club in around the 8/10m mark. Few Gurn's around at the mo. Keep away from the e...

Waihi and surrounding areas

Heading up to stay at Bowen Town during the school holidays. Where should I head out? I've never fished this area before - closest I would have been are Ohope or Opito... and that's clearly not particularly close. Softbaiting and lure fishing is my thing.

Thanks for any intel.

Re: Sulivans Bay for a newbie

Used to fish there all the time when I lived in AK. Great spot. Have caught fish everywhere there. The hole app the beach does hold fish but I've found better fishing outside the harbour mouth on the edges of the channels. There's a drop off / hole tucked in behind Pudding Island that has been good ...

Re: Kuaotunu - where to fish

It seems like such a long time ago.... but I actually did really well out there. Fished in about 16-18m out from the start of the Black Jack cliffs and got plenty of pannies plus 2 big FAT trevs - both on a Atomic Sunrise softie. Best trevs I've caught of the yak actually. :y: :y: Looking forward to...

Kuaotunu - where to fish

Hi, Been out of the 'yak for way too long - over a year in fact. But have just returned from overseas and am in self-iso for another 9 days. No symptoms or anything as yet and feel fine.... but the wife and son are sick of tip-toeing around me and have given me the go ahead to bugger of for a few da...

Skunked at Kohi Point

First time fishing this area and first time back in the yak since last summer! Headed out at 6am from Kohi Point / Whakatane Heads via the little inlet by Sugarloaf? Fished off the end of Kohi from 10m all the way out to 26m. Landed and released about 25 little Kahawai (would have been perfect live ...

Re: Ohope - tips and tricks.... visiting over Xmas

Usually launch of ocean road normally at toilet block or tawai street or anywhere I can park under the trees. Worm beds are at around the 17-25m about 1.5k out. Is a surf beach but not usually anything to worry about. Coastguard on channel 18. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Cheers Jordan - Much...

Ohope - tips and tricks.... visiting over Xmas

Hi, Am heading up to Ohope for Xmas, there from the 19-27 Dec. Never been to that part of NZ before, but am keen to drag the Yak and Rods out of their (semi) retirement and get amongst it. Lures and Softbaits preferred... and some topwater stuff for Kings. Will happily livebait. Any pointers gratefu...

Kerikeri - tips for a visitor please

Long time no post! Have dragged my poor dusty Yak all the way from Havelock Nth to Kerikeri as I am working here tonight... but am keen to get a line wet tomorrow as the weather settles. Talked to the guys at H&F here who recommended I head to the mouth of Kerikeri Inlet via Wharerua Rd. And then pr...

Mahia - any tips gratefully welcomed

Hi. Having moved from Auckland in the middle of the year, I find myself having not done a single days 'yak fishing over the past 6-7 months - which pains me greatly. We've got a few days booked up in Mahia in the middle of Jan... and I've never been there before. I assume I should be taking my kit.....

27.9.16 - Middle ground in a boat. Pray these schools end up close to shore.

Haven't actually been on my kayak since moving from Oratia in West Auckland to Havelock in Eastern Hawkes Bay. In fact, moving, getting set up in the new house, overseas travel for work, school holidays, the golf courses of Hawkes Bay and a new dog have kept me from even getting near the water. But ...

I'm in. My yak will still be in storage - alongside all my kit - so it'll just be me and some beers.

Bugger... all my gear (and Yak for that matter) are in a storage lock up in Hastings.... no chance to get at anything until the end of the month as who knows where anything is in there... *sigh*

Re: Mid winter get together

Hi - I'll be in for sure. Just bought a place in The Bay after 3/4 months looking - and having done almost 100% of my yak fishing in Mahurangi - will be keen to get the low down on what's what. Please keep me in the loop.

Got lots of attention yesterday, but no actual hook ups.... I don't think my knot was great though, hook was a bit off centre... will keep trying this though... can see it being deadly when the bait fish are about

Mahurangi: May 9th 2016 - Redemption.

Couldn't leave Auckland on the back of two 'ducks' so got up to Mahurangi this AM to take advantage of the forecast 5knt Easterly / Incoming tide combo... I planned to paddle out to the reef marker and float in as the sun came up. :y: Only, it was actually a 10-12knt Sou'Wester when I got there... m...
