Re: Fish Finder, el cheap, wot yer reckon?

I will add to the 'don't do it' . I honestly think you'd be better off without a fish finder at all. Instead spend your money on: - A water proof case for your smartphone - A years subscription to the Navionics app I get more from my Navionics app these days than I do my fish finder when looking for...

Battered and Fried

What are your techniques and recipes for battering and frying? The current one I use is this one which I've had great success with (I don't add paprika). It's pretty simple and easy though you do end up breading your hands. I've spied an awesome looking recipe in this cookbook I have at home but hav...

Re: Returning to the kayak, where & what to catch in Wellington?

Wasn't feeling so great on Saturday so I decided to just float about in the Harbor instead of going on a mission. I spent a lot of time trying to catch gurnard between Shelly Bay and Halswell Point, trying different baits and all sorts. Even sat in the burly trail of some boat parked up at Halswell ...

Re: Returning to the kayak, where & what to catch in Wellington?

Hey all, Tomorrow is looking good for a paddle! Not sure where I should try though, South Coast, Evans or Makara. I'm kinda keen to try the South Coast with the weather looking so calm, I don't mind heading to Evans when it's not so great but the South Coast terrifies me when the wind picks up. I hi...

Re: kahawai recipes

The new Al Brown book Eat Up New Zealand has a fair few fish recipes, I think there is one in there for raw Kahawai

Re: Hang kayak with pulley

I NEED to see this! ... :drunk: EDIT: Nevermind, found it :D Props to the guy who shared that! For what it's worth my Dad took me and my sister out when we were younger (early 2000's) one morning. We had 3 kayaks on a custom made trailer mount thing, forgot to tie them down, drove about 25 km (amazi...

Re: Sea Sickness Medication

I can't help you with getting a hold of some Paihia Bombs but I also suffer from motions sickness (car, ocean, etc...) and ginger pills have worked really well for me, they're my go-to.

Re: How do you deal with spiny dogfish in a yak?

Cool thanks for the tips, I picked up some cheap pliers today (they'll probably end up in the drink  ) and I hope to head out this weekend. Can't wait :)

Re: How do you deal with spiny dogfish in a yak?

hmmm, interesting Needle nose pliers are great. I normally grab the spiny dog by the scruff of the neck with a wet rag, watch out for its tail as it will try to twist it around. Then use the pliers to de hook it and off it goes. When I try to imagine doing this I picture one hand holding the rod, on...

How do you deal with spiny dogfish in a yak?

So how do people deal with species such as spiny dogfish in a kayak. It's one thing landing them on the rocks or a boat but I'm not quite sure what I'll do with one in a Kayak!

Re: Returning to the kayak, where & what to catch in Wellington?

Straight off the beach at Makara is my fav - always a Teri or two hanging around - check out sunken rock also. I'll be looking forward to getting out there once I get this work load off my shoulders! Snaps are coming back too!! Yehaaa! When you say straight out how far are you talking? Like in that...

Returning to the kayak, where & what to catch in Wellington?

Hey all, I'm returning to Kayak fishing after a couple of years off. I used to frequent Evans Bay and Eastbourne in Wellington Harbour where I'd catch a lot of Kahawai and I'll probably head out in Evans Bay but where else can / should I go for a good fish? I used to only like catching fish with a l...
