Re: Cable Bay

Hey hey, man... been a while since I showed my face about these parts. (Sorry, busy). I generally fire Mike a txt when I'm heading to Nelson with Njord strapped to the roof. Yup, this trip was awesome. The Dolphins were a buzz! I'm heading back up to Nelson Monday 15th for work until 19th. Then head...

Re: Downrigger

Growing up in Rotorua I used to fish out of a 12ft dinghy. I made a makeshift down-rigger using a drink can filled with lead, attached one of the scotty clips to it, and attached it to a green cotton fishing line. Marked every 10m of the downrigger line. You could probably use coloured braid instea...

Re: Spinning reel to use off river mouth as well

Do you want a rod or reel or both? Topic says spinning reel, while your post only mentions a rod. Abu Garcia Veritas rod's are AWESOME. I use a 7-10kg 2 piece 7foot rod with a Shimano Curado 200 bait caster as my set up for salmon fishing the rivers here in Chch, but I also use it for soft baiting o...

Hey all, Just thinking about things and thought I'd ask the question here if anyone's done it, doing it, or says 'DON'T DO IT'. When finding a work up of kahawai in the kayak, it can be tricky to get past them to target a kingie. Due to our slow speed (most of us can't paddle too fast in these fishi...

Re: Nelson n00bie

Yea, I think I was pretty lucky. The plan to take the kayak at this time of the year was a loose one until I heard Gurnard are around through the winter... certainly didn't expect Cod or Tarakihi, nor the size of that gurnard to be fair. Check out the wee clip I threw together over here: http://www....

Nelson Kayak Initiation

So, shot up to Nelson for two days work. Decided a Fri/Mon would work best to allow the weekend of Fishing. First time out in Nelson, and just joined this forum earlier in the week. Met MikeAqua for a beer at the Sprig on Friday night which was great and then headed out at a relaxed time Sat morning...

Re: The kayak works!

Congrates! My first trip out I hooked, saw then lost a 15+ pound snapper. Just had another trip in Nelson and caught cod, tarakihi and gurnard. Stoked, can't wait until the snapper and kingies arrive!

Re: Nelson n00bie

Yup, the weather sounded crap for Sunday but perhaps the naming my Viking kayak the norse god of the sea helps! It was flat and sunny until I came in at 3pm... with two gurnard on board. A stonker 45+cm and another just legal. So, my fiancee and I dined on Cod, Tarakihi and Gurnard on Sunday night. ...

Nelson n00bie

So, caught up with MikeAqua for a few beers and then headed out for a fish this morning. Murf showed up and kept me company until we paddled in. I left the car at a gentlemens time of about 8 and we got back about 1:30pm. Caught my first Blue cod and Tarakihi from the Yak, so dinner is sorted and pr...

Hey, Cool, sounds good. Yup, I'll be back in Nelson in November for sure for some more work. Could organise something then? Certainly going out with someone else who's experienced in yak fishing would be great! I'm still sorting out systems and where things should be etc etc. Seeing how others do th...
