<p>Sells for around $350 at a range of marine electronics retailers but of course you may find it on special from time to time, I&#8217;ve seen it under $320 at times.</p>
<p>You should always carry a means of communication while out on the water, yes you can take your cellphone but lets be honest how many phones work when they get wet&#8230;</p>
<p>I like to carry my VHF on me in my PFD pocket rather than fixed to the kayak, if I need to make a distress call to the Coastguard that probably means things have turned very bad and if it&#8217;s that bad I&#8217;m probably not with my kayak&#8230;</p>
<p>I see the VHF as an essential piece of equipment, we all need a way of raising the alarm if needed&#8230;</p>
