There are squid all through Mellons/Howick Beach they have been catching them off the shore casting over the weed with the squid jigs on floats. Apparently just as many in the daytime as at night.

Might have to get down there tonight....with high tide around 10pm, little wind, I'll have a go at the Howick Boat ramp....

I'm frequently out the East Coast Bays during winter hunting Squid if anyone is keen for a night or two out.
Always land based, dusk/night, floats and UV Jigs works best for me :y:

ok, so shopping list so far is some uv squid jigs, I've got those charger torches, and my normal casting setup. keen as mustard to get out and try this now after reading some of the old posts re squidding.

I've seen a squid iki thing in smartmarine/burnsco before so might have to get one of them too. My wife loves squid so didnt need any convincing there.

Anyone else going to try this evening ? I'm keen to go wherever, with whoever :)

now going to go youtube some experience on it.

027 7328555 if your keen :)

nice little alien.

So yeah, need to know some spots i'm not going to be chucking my lures into chickenwire snagville. last time i went fishing at eastern beach there was some insane barren reef all the way in from the marker, which would make short work supposedly of something with than many spikes in it.

Where do people suggest going ? I'm going to try and get a light up lure if possible too, hell even under the harbour bridge might produce ( no idea what the bottom is there tho ) think lil rich might be tagging along, if he can bare to let this lovely afternnon go to waste. should be a mirror everywhere out there now.

I'd be out there, but kinda looking after the wife plus waiting on my new ride to be ready. (new to me, not brand spanking)

Technique really depends on where you plan on going.
As I'm mostly around the rocky bays, I use a sliding stoppered float with a trace long enough to have the jig sitting about a metre from the weed.

As far as spots go.. it's pretty much limitless.
If you plan on staying on the south side of the bridge.. all of Mission Bay/St Heliers areas are very popular.
All of the Bays on the north side of the bridge.
Basically look for foul and try to have your jig just above it.

Then you have Egi.. thats a whole different kettle of fish.
No floats, and you need to be aware of sink times etc as you are actively using/flicking the jig.
Look it up as there are much better ways of explaining it that I ever could
This is a good article and will give you a great starting point :y:

Orakei Wharf, by Kelly Tarltons, at night-time. It has the huge advantage of bright lighting. Cast your squid jig just to the edge of the light on the water.

You'll also see the latest and greatest squidding rigs as used by all the Asian fishers who catch a lot of this delicacy there.

How about this easy reading.

Get 2x anglers lights from the warehouse for $6 each, when dark go for a paddle put lights inside ziplock bags and tape to the handle of the paddle inside the blades, go out over reef in shallows deploy breadcrumbs in water and turn on lights, face lights to water , wait for bait fish to appear and deploy egi below bait fish catch squid continue putting breadcrumbs in water.

If you can save squid ink put in freezer bags to make squid ink ice cubes, good burley for kingis. :^)
