Being cunning I had booked the Monday and Tuesday off as leave before Anzac day, and went camping with family and a mate and his family at Otautu Bay, Colville. Naturally both of us took our kayaks and fishing gear.
Saturday and Sunday it blew it's nut off from the South West, but the forecast for Monday was looking excellent, so the plan was hatched. Originally we were going to hit Fantail Bay, but given the opportunity we opted for Fletchers Bay instead. Neither of us had ever been up there before, so anything was possible.

The conditions were close to perfect with a light SW and the odd gust.

We launched at sunrise and low tide, (Adam did, I was a few minutes later as I had to make a visit to the ablutions block) and we paddled straight out. By the time I got out to him, Adam had a couple of legal snapper and a blue cod, but had returned them all as we were on the hunt for bigger things. Over the next couple of hours we explored, caught a couple of nice pannie snapper and were left frustrated by the kahawai schools that had no attendant kingfish.

In chatting with a couple of boats, they were experiencing the same issue.

I spend a good amount of time sitting in the back eddy of the rock to the NE of Square Top, trying to wrangle something out of the kahawai and maomao schools, but no joy. Still it was impressive scenery, and I was in awe of the current lines and back eddy off the rock, that rose up from near 30 metres to break the flow of the tide. I was idle in the glassy water, apart from being rotated slowly by the eddy, while Adam less than 10 metres away from rocketing past at 3 to 4 knots.

After tiring of that we moved back closer to the shore, Adam went to the Pinnacles and I fished the channel between Square Top and the reef. There things really fired, no monster fish, but solid pannies from 40-55 cm, a fish a drop for me. After I added a couple more to the bin, and returned a few more, I trolled around the reef to see if I could find the elusive kings...
Again no joy, Adam had also been giving it his best effort to find them, with the same result, so we decided to call it a day and paddled back in on the high tide.

Between us we kept eight nice pannies from 35 -56 cm, returned probably a dozen similar models and few of the pesky kahawai.
All the fish I caught were on the Savage Gear Bleak Paddle Tail in white/silver ( tried other patterns and softbaits, also slow jigged briefly, but no joy) and all of Adam's were on a skoot he tied.
It was the single best experience of kayak fishing I have had, the scenery, the terrain, the promise and the fishing.

We are already plotting our return and next time it will be for moochers and kings....

Nice - My Mates and I used to camp at Otautu - always lamented no boat - wish I had been into kayak fishing then - quite a few years back.

Looks like a great day out!

Nice report. Wicked spot. Sometimes the fishing is just a bonus when you get a location and conditions like that. Mean.
