Another weekend another great forecast :y:

Made a plan to specifically target Kingfish today and nothing else (Still a cheek 4/0 ledger on the bottom though!). Launched from the beach at around 6.30 and quickly found the bait schools at the 15m mark. Along with Kingfish ! And a lot of them. Schools of rats came past before i even had a bait in the water. Dropped sabikis down and hooked up on the bait, but i quickly found out the mackies were huge and straightening my hooks! So a swap to heavier bait flies quickly got me a Kingfish Lollipop. While i got the Livie set up i caught another which went into the net tied onto the yak for a backup bait.

I got the Mackerel down and put him at 10m with an 8/0 Circle through his back, Continued bait-fishing too. I got a massive hit on my tiny fly hooks , and brought up a rat kingfish on size 12 hooks which refused to surface. While this was going on the mackerel got taken and screamed off wrapping up on the burley bag, With two fish on mayhem ensued! Sorting out the wrapped up line. In all the mayhem the braid cut through my new nets leash and sank to the bottom of the ocean  , i got stuck into the live baited fish and swapped between the two fish eventually the small hooks gave way. I quickly worked out the live baited fish wasn't small. It peeled close to 100m while i was still on anchor. Time to drop it and give chase!

The fight continued toward the 20min mark and i got a glimpse of the fish, Surprisingly it was swimming on the surface with its fins above the water. I immediately thought shark from the shape of them. But it was quite a distance away so i couldn't be sure. The fish then went deep and it was very tough to get any line back on it. Started to get it back up and the final run came when it saw the boat, the fish surfaced and it was confirmed a Kingfish! BIG, I've never seen one this big in the flesh before so it was a special moment which included a bit of whooping and yahooing. Struggling to get the fish into the yak i'd done it 15 kilos of Kingi over a metre.

Fight time of 25mins. A huge goal ticked off which came from some serious hours whenever i could manage it. And i'll be remembering it for a long time.

I somehow got the head into my chillpod and covered the tail with a wet towel. Back to the anchor to continue fishing! The plan now was to catch some bottom species for a feed, Since there was a ton of bait around still another live macky went over and got smashed but didn't stay hooked. I caught and released a ton of hard fighting Kahawai before another solid hookup on the ledger. Some screaming runs before the fish surfaced. It was a snapper! a definite PB est 2.5 - 3kg Since my net had sank, i took a look at the hook placement and decided it had a good enough hold to lift it in. Nope ! Hook pulled and away goes the PB :drunk: No proof it happened :tmi:

Wrapping up the day i had another fish eat a bait and got 100m off the reel before i got off anchor. It turned out the be another King of 85cm. Made the call to keep it for some extra fish in the freezer and Headed home. Along with the two larger kings i released 4 other rats.

I note you've caught a John Dory in Taranaki Port, you'll prolly like to know, when my mum was a girl, her mum, used to take her down, to the wharves there and catch John Dory. Good to know, they're still there.

Well bloody done. I liked the video on youtube too. The way you stayed calm with a double hoodlum hookup, lost net, etc and still managed to calmly nail that kingi is something to be proud of for sure. Sure, sandy bottom helped but I know plenty of people, myself included who wouldn't have been anywhere near as composed under that pressure.

In the video, when you grabbed it from the tail I was waiting for all hell to break loose.

The first go i got at the fish (when it was swimming alongside the yak)
It was off cam but the first go i had at the tail it quite frankly dealt to me , i couldnt hold on so i had to let go. then i had another go and it did the same. Gladly with nearing the half hour mark the King was tired enough to get a good hold on the tail.
