Went for a little mish off North Shore on Monday, went deep and got nothing but sharks. 1.5m Thresher, 1.5m Hammerhead and about 10 smaller grey sharks all caught on pillies and also while live baiting for kingies. Bait fish everywhere on the sounder jack macks and small ky but no proper workups or snaps underneath, maybe the shark infestation scared everything else away. Decided to head closer to shore at high tide and boom up comes this beauty in 4m of water. Measured at 80cm and over 10kg (maxed out kitchen scales, looked like 11kg), fat as and great condition! New PB and never thought I d catch one 15 min from my house close to busy beaches, jetskis and wake boarders all around. Midday, no current on half a mushy pillie. Pulled harder than the sharks although tired a lot quicker.

Going to try and preserve the jaw as it is pretty impressive. Will boil head for 15 min, remove any remaining flesh (for the fish soup/stock) and then soak in 1 to 5 bleach/water solution overnight. Then spray with clear coat and stick the jaw pieces together.
Is this ok has anyone here tried preserving jaw/head?

Best tasting snapper I've ever had, steaks with no bones and were delicious fried in light batter. Fed 5 people with just as many fillets and wings in freezer. Will make soup from head and rest of frame. Beautiful creature and total respect. Don't think I could bring myself to kill another one of this caliber, pic and release next time.

Well done sharkbait! That's huge for anywhere, but so much more so for Auckland waters.

Great specimen mate. Musta pulled a bit of string. Did any of the spines "pin" you whilst on the yak? Cheers Adrian

Epic fish! You should be stoked with that!! Would love to see a photo of the jaw when it's done! There's some good YouTube vids that might help.
