My first trip of 2015. It wasn't meant to be a species hunt, but it turned out that way.

First fish of 2015 was a small blue cod.

A nice john dory came next.

Then a good hook-up. Didn't fight like a snapper or a kingfish, thought it was a frost fish when I first saw it, but no, my first barracouta after two years of fishing in NZ.

Next up was a gurnard caught on a soft bait.

Image

The next species to grace my kayak was an unusual catch, a squid.

Image

A couple of reef fish came next, a sea perch and a scarlet wrasse.

Although I was enjoying myself, I was starting to wonder where the snapper were! Eventually, a few small fish popped up.

Image

Having kept a small snapper, the john dory and squid, I decided it was time to go home, but one last drop... and boom!

Image

I would have put money on it being a kingfish as it was running so fast, but no, a good "Northland pannie" which was released.

A great morning out. Nice to catch a few different species (and a biggie), all on a slow jig, apart from the gurnard.

I know! I was trying for a kingfish (as always!), didn't see any work-ups, so no kahawai and think I've only caught one trevally since I've been up here. Ten species would have been even cooler 8)

The ultimate mixed bag except the coutta haha.
When I first started yak fishing I was out at dusk and hooked a coutta. I was so freaked out I didnt know what it was so towed it back to the beach.
Great photos.

I was pleased to catch it because I've never caught one before, but one's enough. Snapper and kingfish will do just fine :D
