Missed heading up North to Taipa for our usual long weekend visit to my parents, so thought I'd sneak out for a couple of hours this morning off Takapuna Beach. My wife and her friend were keen for a beach walk and breakfast at a cafe, so chucked my gear in the car and along with them we headed to Takapuna at 8am.

Launched at about 8.40 and started seeing a bit of sign at about 8m depth. Had a little prospect, but aside from some small bites not much was happening. The wind was stronger than I expected, and the drift was quite quick.

Got out to about 10m and thought I'd have another crack. Not long after got my first snapper, a well conditioned little pannie. Thought I might up the ante a bit and chucked out a 6" pink gulp on a 5/8th jig head and left it to drag along the bottom while I drifted.

Went through a few more patches of sign but not much activity when whack, I got a heavy strike on the dragging sb. I quickly grabbed the rod and kept the weight on as what ever it was pulled a bit of string. I was initially picking it for another decent snapper, so was surprised to see a massive John Dory pop up next to the yak. I grabbed it as quick as I could and chucked it on the stringer asap.

The rest of the trip was pretty quiet, with two more snapper to add to the bag.

Just got home and weighed it on our kitchen scales, pulled them down to a shade under 2.6kg, which is the biggest John Dory I've ever seen, let alone caught :) It measured 51cm nose to tail.
