So I had plans for a big adventure this weekend on a mothership but the skipper made the call to pull the pin due to weather… fair call but naturally having taken time off work and mentally prepared myself for a big weekend I was gutted. :headbang:
A bit of towing and frowing with text messages and eventually a plan was hatched.
A last minute decision was made to have a recon mission up north in preparation for the bridge to cape comp. I was already packed and ready to go and it took little persuasion to have KK as co pilot.
I was very pleased as Northland is a very unknown area to me.
I got to Auckland by midday Friday, even snuck in a 30 minute spa while I waited for KK to get home from work then off to Whangarei.
Got up at 5.30am on and headed out to a location that I’m sworn to secrecy. A bit of wind, pretty nasty wind against tide actually but we were out to find Kingfish and some good fishing in general.
A few hundred metres offshore and I cast out my first soft bait…. Nothing. A few more fruitless casts and I spotted birds working on the horizon so headed out and about to make the call on the VHF (like any courteous fellow kayak fisher would) when I saw KK already there.
I gave him 100m to spare in case he hooked up on something good and began my first drift.
All but 200 metres from shore my strayline started to pull. Very slowly I grabbed the rod from its holder and began to drag my pillie from the weeds when it woke up and peeled line.
A few woohoo’s out to Pope who was fishing nearby and the kayak swung back into the head wind. My softbait rod also doubled over from the forward rod holder on my 400 all the way to the rudder and crack… broken :@ . I continues to play the fish on the strayline and brought a 78cm / 15lb snapper to the surface.
After a frustrating untangle job of my softbait rig wrapped around my rudder I found that ‘the other’ fish was still there but soon after I was busted off.
Back out to where I started and another drift, back onto the same spot and cast out a squid vishous on the broken softbait rod, it was only missing the top eye and a little of the tip. The jig head was tangled in the weed and I eventually managed to drag it out and immediately felt that annoying ‘nibbly’ feel of a leatherjacket or squid, sign on the sounder pretty much confirmed the likely outcome of this softbait. In frustration I yanked on the rod vigorously, it then took off…. Almost about 40 metres of took off.
I fought back and after about 4 solid runs, the fish became to come to the surface…….. a new PB at 84cm / 27lb 6oz….. stoaked
