Well after making a promise to take the family away on a fishing trip, and having a sensational kayak mother trip last month with Skipper Pete on Te Wairoa, DJ and I decided to hire the boat again and take our families away for a bit of trip around the Coromandel and the Mercury Islands…..As Mrs DJ said….”this is NOT a fishing trip !!”

So an early start Saturday morning, breakfast at the Golden Arches in Thames, a quick stop prior to Coromandel (little kids don’t travel well on windy roads) we arrived at Kennedy Bay to be met by Skipper Pete…..a quick load up onto his 16 ft Dory and a couple of RIBs and we transported oursleves to the Te Wairoa that was moored in the bay…funny thing is that we seemed to have accumulated more gear taking our families than 7 of us did with all our kayak fishing gear last month |( |( …...tho’ we did have our fair share of fishing rods, and a tandem kayak for the family to play on !

Once we’d loaded all the gear on board, we set sail for Mercury Island and a spot of fishing and sightseeing…..weather nice and sunny although a little windy than I’d expected……
Trawling some lures (just happened to have some Marlin and Skippie lures amongst our tackle) we managed to snag a few kahawai and a rat kingie or two…..

To get out of the weather we moored up in one of the bays around the back of Gt Mercury where we did a spot of fishing and had lunch…
Unfortunately the fishing wasn’t that great all weekend but the kids and the wives had a blast with them snaring a few different species of all different sizes…

Looks like I lost the fishing comp !
Sat nite saw us moored up in a little bay with a bunch of big launches that were in the middle of a Marlin fishing comp. Much to the relief of some of the kids (mine actually) there was cell phone / text coverage! Skipper Pete complimented our entrée of freshly smoked Marlin on crackers (courtesy of my neighbor) with a feast of salads and steaks, followed by a couple of glasses of lemonade !!

A relatively late start the next morning (maybe the lemonade was a bit flat ??) saw a bit more fishing before we cruised off for a paddle in the kayak, and a snorkel adventure for DJ’s family.

After lunch we started heading home arriving back at Kennedy Bay around 3pm.

Heading home !!
A great trip, some great scenery and as always made better by good company..

Great stuff guys. Awesome place to take the family. As an aside, how many people did you go with, and how'd you find the space?

Everyone is a genius.

But if you judge a fish
on its ability to climb a tree.
it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.
