We see these everywhere in our estuaries, does anyone know if we can use them for bait.

I did, years ago in my Trevally phase and couldn't get to the pipi or tuatua beds.
Boil the hell out of them and then salt them down for something useable.
Untreated, pour them into a condom and stick that on the hook. Only way you'll get these snotty things to stay on raw. :D

Add in a barnacle berley (scraped off wharf pilings with an ice-cream container) and you're in.

Go for pipi or tuatua as a first choice though. Oysters are just hard work as bait.

As long as you take the base shell as well (ie leaving clean rock) as they won't recolonise onto a previous tenants shell. In jargonese, "Rock and Pacific oysters must not be opened while they adhere to the object on which they grow." Nature however hasn't read that bit of the fisheries info pack...

Not hard to harvest by any means...the condom was a dig at trying to keep fluid snot on a hook.....I don't wear pantyhose

If you get up to my neck of the woods when the cordons are lifted, I'll endeavour to introduce you to the XOS Trevs up this way....

Thanks for response, I'm sure I read somewhere there's some regulations about collecting them, that now clarified.
My thoughts were that there're re invasive and to use them IF THEY WORKED would make sense.

When I was a kid, Rock oysters were protected, and Pacific oysters were only found occasionally.

When the oyster farming industry took off, the resultant spat, out-colonised the Rock oysters almost completely.

So when eating oysters off the rocks, take a hammer and give the shell remaining on the rock, a good whack, it'll usually cease to be an issue.
