After some recent success trolling a lure I've been looking around for a smallish lure that works at kayak trolling speeds down to 9-10m.

All that I can find info on is the Dr Evils that aren't sold here anymore.

Had a look around Marine Deals today but the only deep divers were large big game lures.

Anyone found anything that roughly replaces these legendary Dr Evil things?

i have caught snapper on these trolling behind a kayak in close in auckland and they float which can be useful if you see the depth suddenly reduce (stop paddling and up pops your lure) although they only rated to run at 6 metres deep - you can feel it hitting the bottom at 6-6.5M so i would suggest at least 7M if you dont want to lose it - thinner line will also get you down deeper

i have the 11.5cm size in dorado and also purple skipjack colours

i wouldn't suggest for a moment that they are better than dr.evils as i haven't tried dr. evil

you can see their action in this video

in my view catching snapper dragging a deep running lure on a kayak is something you do a couple of times as a novelty and then you decide there are better ways to catch fish - retrieving a fish with a big bibbed lure on the line acts like a handbrake and really deadens the fight

a 60g squid wings will get down to the depths you want to get to, they are effective and easier to tow

you'll have to play around with your speed and depth to establish how deep they are running

I have a Dr Evil you can have for $20. It has seen the water on one trip out so has some scuff marks on the bib.

4 Decent snaps and a JD.

I couldn't see more than 3m in front of me from 6am till 10am the fog was that bad.

So I kept close in to the cliffs and just trolled around.

If you didn't have a fish finder with GPS charts, you'd be lost in seconds. I literally had to stare at the screen and keep the little green line on course or I'd quickly wander off into nowhere.

Curried snapper for dinner :)

Awesome. They work good 8)
Squashing the barbs down is safer too. Looks like you swapped to double hooks from the trebles?
You would have to be brave to run diving lures without a depth reading fish finder ay .

Yeah went for doubles. Didn't like the idea of using trebles on the yak, and didn't know if that lure would swim ok with singles.

With doubles it swims with a really wiggly butt, seems to work :)

Plus the chance of cowboy skippers- good call. Nice one dude.

Where’d you get the double hooks and what size?

Did you catch the JD on the dr evil by chance?

https://www.marine-deals.co.nz/owner-dh-41-double-hooks 2/0 was the smallest, I'd like a little smaller to be honest but the seem to work well.

Caught the JD on a coconut ice zman - they seem to like the pink.

I have tried small inline singles , the trebles give much better results though. Double hooks seem to maintain the correct action that the snapper seem to like. Don’t go too small in Hook size, the maniacal undersized snapper that hit these things will surprise you! I flatten the barbs for my own peace of mind, but if you want a better chance of kahawai not shaking the lure loose leave the barbs intact.

Haven't tried the Dr evil myself but I have been having great success with the strikepro supersonic in the last 2 months, one trip this lure caught me 6 pannies where my fav Softbaits did not hooked any legal ones that day (that's fishing I supposed...)

I generally let out 25 to 30 m of line and troll this lure at around 4km/hr

Keep an eye out for special too as I think I got mine for around $8

Savage Gear Manic Prey Diver work well , . Still, it's not a magic bullet, you can drag Dr Evil or anything else, but when they won't bite....they just won't bite. Then you wonder why you bothered. A lot of extra effort for diddly squat in return 😣
