Can anyone who has paddled both comment on relative speed?

I'll soon be in the market for a replacement kayak and considering whether to get another P400 or stretch to a reload if I can?

I'm heavier than optimal for the hull so it tends to bog down and drag and I'm wondering if going up to the reload might help.

It's rated for 25 more kg. Also, being longer and slightly narrower it should cut the water better?

Sharkey has both. Goes like a cut cat in either. Unlike the fish he catches he himself is not an oversized model though :)

What about a 440? I'm loving my 400 but looking to get more waterline for stretching the legs a bit and some speed. Do not wish to bag the 400, I can chunter along nicely and more so with my Greenland paddle. But sometimes size does matter.

To through the cat amongst the pigeons - if you're looking for a little bit of speed mate, the Stealth range are pretty quick. My cruising speed on the 525 is 8-9kmph in a mild sea state and calm conditions. The 500 and 575 are quick also. Food for thought.

Insurance claim ... replacement value if insurer buys it for me, but depreciated value if I take cash.

I really like the look of the stealth 495. But I don't think the insurer will buy me a different kayak.

Could always get the P400 and sell it 'as new', then use that $ to get a reload

Maybe ask around here if someone wants a discounted new P400 and get them the colour etc they want.

P.S. I have a reload - it's not just the speed difference, it's the removable pod with integrated Fishfinder that's the big + and convinced me to spend the extra bucks.

All depends what the insurer has to say and how flexible they will be.

The insurer will most likely give you a cash payment of deemed value, you should then be able to purchase what you like as a replacement. :y:
I went from the 440 to the reload. Still miss the fishing platform of the 440 and believe it is hard to beat.
The reload is a more comfortable yak with the seating position and the pod is great for storage purposes when not in use if you have to store your yak outside. I have added additional railblaza rod holders just behind he seat in front of rear pods which has made the fishing bloody awesome.

Unfortunately our insurance policy gives the insurer the right to pay depreciated value if we opt for cash instead of replacement items.

Not sure how that applies to the trailer? I purchased it second hand.

If I were buying again, I'd be going Reload. Have had the 440 and 400, and both were nice.
