both sound pretty good to me, will probly choose the closer to home one but kakanui looks like it has some good fish.
was chatting with a farmer when doing an install at waianakarua south of there and he was saying theres great cod out from there too.

Hello all. I'm keen to get out and catch some blue cod. I'm new to the kayak fishing sport and only ever fished from my kayak in the central lakes. Is the Aramoana Spit any good? I'm tempted to head up to Karitane some time as I hear there are some good spots up there...

Hi Jack from up in Oamaru, if your ever keen to head up this way we have a couple of good spots up here with out having to paddle too far. Shag point has good and bad days. Lately we have been going out at Kakanui and getting blue cod, red cod, ras, kawi and moki. Probably heading out from Kakanui again this weekend. Will get down there at some stage. Have posted videos from Kakanui in the theatre section on this site. Enjoy

Nice videos! Is that gulp soft bait you are using?
What time do you guys usually head out?

hey there calico i am dunedin based as well, i have set up a trailer so if you want to head up that way i will try to organise to go up as well and we can split gass or something.
i havnt been out aramoana in the yak but on my tinnie i got a couple of trumpeter. I am interested in trying a smails beach launch and going round maori head some time when the swells are right (20m depth close to shore with rock / kelp seems like it should be good to me).
warrington has blue cod out round the kelp fields, and i have heard karitane is good for blues as well though have never been out there.
andy have you been south of kakanui to all day bay? its pretty much waianakarua i think, there is a massive kind of atol area with kelp that i suspect would be pretty fish heavy. also you can park within about 10m of the water so a nice short carry. google maps link i would be keen to try it out some time

Somewhere more local to Dunedin would suit better until I've been out a few times. Smails Beach sounds good.

What conditions should be avoided in terms of wind speed, wave height, period, swell etc? Is there a general rule of thumb figure on these?

i use http://www.swellmap.co.nz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to figure if its safe to go out. the boating tab gives a rating out of 10 however i dont trust that for a few reasons, it is however good to click on a specific forecast in the boating tab to get a week long view of wind directions and strength will use "dunedin" as an example for smails beach.
http://www.swellmap.co.nz/boating/new-zealand/dunedin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
gives a good general breakdown however the boating forecast / rating is intended for boats going out a decent distance, so it can say things are worse than they are, and vice versa. to get a better idea of what its like at the coast i click the maps tab
http://www.swellmap.co.nz/forecast-maps" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
this gives a nice visual forecast showing the direction of swell, size. it also has more categories like wind, rain swell period etc
pink areas are good, anything 1m or less is ok to go out in my opinion.
swell period the longer / higher the better.

Great sites, thanks Daniel.
Hopefully we'll get a good weekend out soon. The weather is pretty dismal at the minute.
I'm booked into Jugganaught Fishing Charters from Taieri mouth at the end of March - $120! It's getting pretty expensive so the kayak will need to start earning it's keep.

seems a bit pricey but i am a cheapass so its probly normal.
would be tempted to go out with you if theres space on the charter, good to chat witht the locals and see what kind of areas are good for paddling too.

Are you guys getting out at all down there?
3 of us went out on sunday morning in perfect conditions from Kakanui, and we all took fish home. I caught blue cod (took 3 home), red cod, a dog fish and a barracuda. All on gulp bait. Looking forward to getting down there again, easy access with a boat ramp. Other fish that we have caught there include moki, ras and kawi.

havnt gotten out seriously in the last couple of weeks, and we just started another ANZ job which means its mostly out of hours work and weekends.
might see how this weekend is looking as i got stupid amounts done last weekend, however wifey is due to give birth any moment so i probly shouldnt stray too far from home.
very much want to head up kakanui way and paddle out all day bay some time though.
