wouldnt realy say i know much about the local dunners spots. caughts a heap of wrass today :( 5 decent ones that i filleted & skinned. actualy quite tasty, just a hassle to process.

amazing calm conditions though. well worth it just for the scenery.

should try and get a response from couda ( http://www.kayakfishingnz.com/forum/mem ... ile&u=2228" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) for hints on the best spots.

green island comes to mind but it involves a decent paddle and a surf launch / landing.

Daniel,

Ive caught a few Wrasse on my Surf caster at Warrington, i know what you mean, they are harder than blue cod to fillet but quite good eating!

Where did you catch the Wrasse today?

Andy, yeah no worries about tomorrow. I will aim to be at Hampden around 8.30.

steve, wrasse caught on the close reef at murdering bay (which i think has been re-named to something maori) here: google maps of the place

went out in my dinghy today with wife and kid. caught a couple of trumpeter out near the spit & the albatross colony. also pulled in so many wrasse it was ridiculous wife and i both brought up 2 at a time on 1 line. got 1 tiny blue cod that went back. also had some german tourist swim past asking where he could see the albatross from which was kinda surreal.

steve if you are heading away next weekend or any time really i am interested in carpooling to save a bit of money etc. also dad told me he has an old trailer thats not in use so i think i will be looking into making a multi yak trailer in the near future, could be good to get a few dunners people organised in the coming summer.

edit: while i was out saturday i jumped off the yak to check how it is for getting back on in deep water, overall pretty darn easy. you look like a bit of a muppet but at least you get on ok.

because of their thick skins I just bake wrasse whole, sometimes I use the meat for fishcakes. I'm keen to get out a little more often than I am. I have a pretty decent stretch of coast north of warrington I have been too lazy to check out. If people are keen to give it a go let me know. I think group trips might be fun and maybe slightly safer. I don't have a roof-rack for my kayak so I might be slightly limited about where I can get to.
I'd like to try shag point and taeri mouth though...although I hear taeri mouth is better for trout than cod.

work has me going to queenstown for the weekend :( so im out of any plans for this weekend, however today for work i drove over to papanui inlet for a rural broadband install (which failed due to low signal) however did make me aware of how awesome it looks out there as a launch site and apparently decent fishing too.

there is a boatshed / launching beach on the left side of what i linked too, just near where that boat is headed, and a pretty decent tidal flow so its a perfect easy paddle back and forth if you can time it with the tides.
edit: looks to be about a 3km paddle each way from the boatshed to surf

definitely somewhere i would like to explore at some point, just need a day with the right conditions.

hmm week is looking a bit quiet work wise. i will consider taking the morning off but trying to save up days for xmass time at the moment.

would be ideal if we get a rural install up that way though :)

plans for this weekend? saturday and sunday mornings are looking ok, not great though.

steve mentioned meeting up with poodle in a different thread, i am up for a paddle out warrington or further north depending on offers.

my trailer is going in for warrant tomorrow, if it passes i should have it sorted for yaks by the end of next week, but untill then its roof bars.

steve i am able to pick you up if you like, or vice versa depending on where we go etc.
