I'm going to be staying at Tata Beach in the last week of April and trying to decide whether to take the kayak or boat or neither.

I was thinking the boat for Separation and/or Kayak for Wainui but I don't know how either fishes in late April?

Any info appreciated.

The end of April is usually the end of the season for shallow water snapper fishing in Golden Bay. Depending on the water temperature there maybe fish around; it's been a warm Autumn so far (water temp at Patons 17.5C today) so you might be in luck.

The end of April is also the end of the voluntary 'no trawling' season for inner Golden Bay. I went out on May 1st last year off Patons Rock, caught nothing, but had two trawlers pass me very close.

As the fishing will likely be getting harder you might have to go further afield. I'd definitely take a boat if you want to be more certain of catching something.

Easter has been pretty good for me at wainui. Really scenic too. Dusk till dark being very productive. It's shallow so yak better than boat. Boat be better for sep pt due to quickly changing weather n high current. Lots of seals. Boats seem to be out 1km+. See chart contours. Will try find some photos. Typical epic nz. Enjoy
