Went out on the yaks first time this morning to hit excellent bite times and king tide. Kayaks were amazing and stable and more than enough room to fish on.
Dropped the first two fish which were gurnard as I didn't have them in the yak while trying to dehook them :-\ lesson learnt to bring the fish into the kayak deck.
A couple reefs around and into a little bay and Burnley out and within 15 minutes the snapper were biting before sunrise, we caught 7 between us with four being above 30 cm so kept them. The biggest a 43 cm beast which towed my brother in law for a little bit.
Wish we had photos of the amazing morning for you all but next time I will take the camera.
Stoaked and pleased that the yaks were brought.
Only problem is once the snapper went of the bite nothing else was caught but little cod along the coast, are the bigger fish a bit deeper or any suggestions?
Cheers guys

Nicely! Sounds like a great first time out. Good to get a feed.
Hunt around n you will pick up a mix of species.
Try varying everything!

Just curious if I should be in quite close to the rocks as it's quite deep close in anyway or be out 10-15 m from rocks

Awesome thank you for the info guys. Mullet is that depth where all the boats were? Did not manage to see you, we launched from Maori pa at 5.30, where did you launch from? While at that depth do you anchor up and lay up a Berkley trail?

There are bigger cod (30 - 40cm) in close, you just have to keep moving around until you find them.

Do you mean safety/comfort or fish activity?

NE tends to be the most difficult to launch in.

I've caught most fish when the wind is from the NW but not too strong.

Cable to marahau fishing well. Lots of bait fish n rat kings of kina. Ask kids at talleys wharf. Some goodies out of rabbit n ruby n some huge breeders removed from Boulder bank.
Had lotsa joy on softies n micro jigs including one session which..... another post another day :D
Beware the light offshore at kina which is nasty couple km out!
