Had a few complaints from local boaties about playing dodge the yaks off kina at weekend. Yeah it was flat n calm but has been suggested that the two with flags were more visible than the 9+ that didn't. Friendly reminder - safety first

One of the most important things about skippering a boat is to be ultra observant, if you cannot see a 4+meter yellow or orange object in the water with rods, net and person attached maybe they need their eyes tested, when launching in dark I always have a light with me for the blind boaties.

Half meter of swell and most noisy boaties will struggle to see or hear us yakkers.
The price of a visibility kit or flag seems inexpensive for peace of mind out there and has also increased how comfortable I feel on the water allowing me to fish places I would normally not have gone.
I seem to recall you mullet almost getting run down out off ngaio by a punctual water taxi operator not too long ago.

Rods nets n people are pretty invisible from 400m
A head torch is a white dot at 100m
A yaks only half above water so not much showing
Sun strike from rising sun definitely a problem at kina
Otha fulla - I recall that incident MAY have been a setup to illustrate the perils of carrying no safety gear

Almost like cycling in Australia. Cycling purists constantly made claims about the law being on there side and motorists needing to be more mindful of cyclists, but at the end of the day size matters and I'll rather do what I can to avoid a pissing contest with a car/truck/boat/ anything bigger.

With regards to the incident off ngaio island after showing the harbour master the footage and confirmation that the taxis do not abide by the law and that there had been many complaints made about them it was dealt with as they had proof, maybe a helium balloon about 2 meters above the kayak will work ? With flashing lights on it as I find in general boaties in NZ are not observant wether at ngaio or cable, kayaked many years in SA with no issues and no flags in high traffic areas.

This is a major in the BoI with both main highways running east-westpetecanaan wrote:Sun strike
Remember: If the shadows on your yak are pointing towards the oncoming boat, you're in their sunstrike.
However, I've frequently had to take action to avoid boats heading out under GPS control. There's a few "Route 101's" up here especially with the game boats. Once they're pointing out into the Pacific, they don't expect to see anything smaller than 30ft.
Pet hate though is the ones that, although they've seen you, don't make it obvious until the last moment and adjust course juuuust enough. In the meantime you're winding in and trying to figure out which side of their hull you're going to be on.
Then there's the d1cks who only do the right thing when they realise you've got a GoPro on your forehead....

Really! You told me you got ignored by the harbour master as your footage of a boat going past proved nothing. If I remember correctly the event in question wasn't videoed by you or me....
Either way learn some manners n stay outa my chunk trail please
