It's not undiscovered any more. I think there will be plenty of people chasing kingfish around the tidal flats this summer after the videos that have been put on You Tube. Nothing in the Challenger fishing regs protecting kingis that I can see. Probably some people are taking fish home but a lot of people seem to be catching and releasing.
There are two small Maitaitai areas on the West Coast though.

A lot of those Kingis are under and fly fisherman generally have a strong catch and release ethic

On that basis, many are hopefully being returned ...

Does anyone know if you can pick them up on kayak in those areas?

The boundaries of the Nature Reserve (it's not a marine reserve) are easy to pick on a map and are shown on the information panel at Triangle Flat (the road end). As a general rule, everything past Puponga township is out of bounds. This leaves plenty of intertidal area between Puponga and Collingwood though.

I'm contemplating chasing them in a small kayak next summer also but you'll have to keep a close eye on the tide. It goes out a long way very quickly and if you misjudge the time you'll have to drag your kayak a long way back to shore.
