A former CLEO Bachelor of the Year finalist has tragically died after drowning whilst on a spear fishing trip in the Bay of Plenty.

Twenty-four-year-old Jacob Beck-Jaffurs, a trainee doctor from Whangerei, had been fishing off Kawera Island, near Tauranga, on Friday when he was found unconscious on the seabed by his diving buddy.

Emergency services were called and CPR was administered but he couldn't be revived.

Beck-Jaffurs was a finalist in the 2010 CLEO Bachelor of the Year.

He described himself as "always smiling and having lots of fun".

This is an absolute tragedy

I played touch rugby with Jake on a few occasions and he was a lovely guy and a talented rugby player, surfer etc. Didn't have long left until he finished his medical training.

It was probably a shallow water blackout given where he was found, but they will be doing a post-mortem.

My condolences to his family and friends.
Like when riding my bike, I know that I am taking a risk when I go kayaking and diving. I accept this as part of having a fitfully life. Even though I lessen the risks where I can, I know that the odds could catch-up with me at any time. If this was to happen, I hope that Family and friends know that I will have died having enjoyed my life. This I hope that his family know was true for him too.
As for Shallow Water Blackout, it is definitely on my mind as a Free-Diver but that I will happy discuss in another Thread.

Recommend watching this YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8RyAo0Qsdk. That diver was lucky his buddies were there. Sound advise from them

Yea a great video to highlight SWB and shows just how on to it his dive buddies were, that could have gone so horribly wrong had they not have reacted so fast.
