PL took me to a car painter, they did more prep and masking as required. What are you getting a sea Kayak?

Looking at all the options at the moment, SIK's included. My main reason for sticking with Polyethelyne so far has been the mainly stone beaches around Hawkes Bay. After reading a bit more about refinishing composites, I think I’d be less bothered by a few scratches here and there, if I budgeted for a new paint job every once and a while.

You will only ever need a re paint every 6-10 years if at all. Mine wasabout that age when purchased in a less than average condition Most repairs are small patches done in your backyard

If you get a composite kayak with gell coat on it it's really simple to repair scratches and knocks, you do need to get the right colour waxed gell coat though .Sand back the scratch and fill with the gell coat (after mixing with the hardner) then after the gell coat sets sand it back to flat with some fine wet and dry ,I use 500 grit then polish with a g3 cutting compound and it will shine like new

Cover the patch with cellophane or it will turn sticky

Cheer guys, that's some great advice, particularly around the repair side of things.

What about changing the colour of a kayak completely? Are there any do's and don'ts with dark to light or vice versa? I'd be keen to stick with white on the underside of the hull, but something a little less 80's on the deck.

don't do anything that's been talked about it just wont last!

strip all the fittings off and vinyl wrap it, cost less, lighter, faster to do under one day, will last longer and next year you can change the colour easy :y:

Well, I did actually suggest that back on Page 2... But probably wasn't really what Ali was asking for.

I have heard very mixed reports about vinyl wrap, but mostly on the automotive side of things.
Just yesterday I received a 3M vinyl wrap for my phone, and it has made me think about this a whole lot more as a viable alternative to painting. It's quite thick and incredibly robust, and could see it lasting for years on a kayak if done properly.
The main reason for this would be to change the colour, but would have a side benefit of keeping the deck like brand new!

what kayak is it for and how old/damaged is it? if its a sit in you will be able to wrap the deck in one piece, could even get a picture printed :y:

Just talking hypothetically at the moment, sussing out the options. I really liked the idea of Ali's refurb which got me thinking. It would probably just be just the deck and probably be in good or as-new condition already. I'll start a new thread on vinyl wraps to keep it outta here.
