What are the advantages of VHF? What does an ok brand cost? What is their range? How water proof? How compacted? Dad had an Old CB radio for the boat there still any good?

A VHF is a communication device you can use to communicate to other water users and more importantly in an emergency you can contact the Coastguard...

There are several brands on the market but to two most common are Uniden and Cobra, both make small handheld models (yes get a hand held so the VHF is with you and not the kayak in the event of an emergency) there are waterproof models and non-waterproof models, bags are specifically made for the later but also using one with a fully waterproof model will also extend its life by keeping water way from it.

No DON'T use a CB...

The biggest advantage of a VHF is that it can communicate with many users, where a cell phone is person to person, a VHF is person to everyone.
You can use it to contact other vessels when you Wouldnt otherwise have a form of contact "like you don't know thier cell phone number", you have instant access to coastguard, and a way of contacting all vessels in the area.
It's also great when out with other kayakers as it gives you all a way of staying in touch (and keeping the bnter going :P )
you also have constant weather reports ect.

Range depends on a couple of things, most hand held units are 1-5w where most hard wired units are 5-25w.
It also depends on what channels you are on, some are pretty much line of site (non repeater) some are repeater channels, where it's a bit more like a cell phone using "towers" to extend the range.

Personally I think that they are well worth the money, and encourage all kayakers to do the course (can be done via home study), and get a VHF.

"Waterproof submersible rated submersible to JIS7 (IPX7) specifications." :y:
Thats the really important bit for kayak use. That means it should still work after getting dunked in the sea. JIS4 rating is not good enough.

My "first aid" kit includes things like a survival blanket and waterproof matches, not just a couple of bandaids.
Electronics : its still magic, even when you know how its done.
