Any suggestions for a fishing charter around Auckland that you have personal experience with and can recommend?

My brother will be visiting from South Africa later this month and we'll do a fair bit of kayak fishing up at Doubtless Bay during the first week, but I'm thinking of sending him on a charter for one day here in Auckland as well. Probably the 26th or 27th of January.

Specifically what I don't want is a boat full of people where you line up one next to the other like the sardines you're trying to catch. Can be a big or small boat, but the space per person should be reasonable.

Not sure whether I'll join him or not. If it's just my brother, he doesn't have too many requirements. If I were to join him, I'd need a boat with a toilet due to IBS, so probably not that easy a requirement. So charters with a big boat with a toilet would be nice to hear about, though not an absolute requirement.

The guy I was going to recommend seems to have gone out of business :(

I'd avoid the cheap as chips, "party boat" trips. I've done a few and to be honest, I'd rather have stayed at home.

If you go for someone that specialises in soft baits and jigging, that'll be a good start. It might even be worth chartering the whole boat so that you can control cost per angler and numbers of anglers. I'm sure you could fill spare spaces quite easily from KFNZ and other fishing forums. It can be a headache doing it this way, but you get what you want in the end.

Serene Charters, the skipper is John. He operates on the Kaipara and pickup is at Shelly Beach. It was $50 for a day trip from memory. If the weather and swell is good and if people are willing, he will cross the kaipara bar. I've had some great trips with him. The toilet isn't flash but it's functional.

I've heard good things about wave dancer. Well, other than price.

Went with a mate on red boat charters once. 30 people using ugly sticks and nylon in the rangi channel on an anchored repurposed ferry. You can imagine what a fun time that was.

I've heard the mussel farm in the firth has a fishing boat that follows them, was going to try it one day with some friends. Think it was 50 a head.
