You may recall the Northland Kayak Fishing Clubs trip to Wellingtons Bay Tutukaka on Sunday 28th April, where we were hosts to a delegation of various people from China, including the Secretary of The China Angling Association and that I was hoping to hear some exciting news when they returned to China. Well here it is!
The inaugural China, Australia, New Zealand (C.A.N) International Kayak Fishing Challenge will take place on 22nd and 23rd September 2013 at the Sheng Zhong Lake in the Sichuan Province of South Western China. The competition is only open to 10 invited anglers from New Zealand, 10 from Australia and 10 selected from China. First (individual) prize is USD$20,000 CASH! (just under NZD$25,000) and goes back to 10th place with a total cash prize pool of USD$55,000 Target species are of course freshwater and include catfish, culter, perch, bream and blackfish.
All food and accommodation will be provided free of charge during the event. Video rigged kayaks (Hobie’s) will also be provided for each contestant and any other special requests will be considered.
As mentioned, entry to the competition is by invitation and there will be no entry fee. I have been asked by the CAA to assist in the “invitation process” in order for 10 kayak anglers from New Zealand to compete. This is a high level competition that is also being backed by local government and sporting bodies in China that will have coverage from various TV stations and other associated media.
If you are interested in representing New Zealand at this event, can I please ask you in the first instance, to email me directly at northlandyakfishers@gmail.com expressing your interest and including a short fishing bio. I will in turn answer any questions you may have (where I can) and also send you further details including the competition rules.
Regards
Karl

Sounds like a fantastic opportunity and a trip of a lifetime!
I would be putting my hand up as fast as but I'm in San Francisco on those dates. ;(
Good luck to all those applying.

Just a reminder that I will be closing down "expression of interest" /applications for this once in a lifetime opportunity, at the end of this week and the NZ Team will be selected by myself and another person shortly after.

Cheers

OK, it's all "go".

Ten confirmed members of the NZ team, the Black Hooks.

It's a really good mix of skills and talents. Since we NZers're not familiar with the various freshwater species being fished for and it's a lure-only comp, that's affected the team selection to an extent.

See Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-New- ... 6602265939

Karl may have more to add on this thread. He deserves huge congratulations in putting together and organizing the entry for NZ's first team to fish a multi-nation kayak fishing comp, and (I believe) the first NZ fishing team to compete in China.

Hi Greg
Was wondering when you guys were going to show up
Yes we are all gearing up for this awesome trip. We will be meeting you guys in Chengdu and overnighting there prior to the journey up to Sheng Zhong the next day.

1- We all are!!!

2- Yes mate ages ago-No fly fishing, but a fly/streamer can be used on normal lines.

See you in CZ in the evening, we will be there for the whole day.

Bummer about the fly fishing guys - would have been a treat to watch.
I'm currently in my shed, looking at more gear than I know where to begin with. Geez it's hard deciding what's coming and what's staying...!
This is such a mad experience packing gear to go fishing somewhere we've never been, and targeting fish we've never seen, let alone caught before!
