The swell and wind weren't too kind for kayak fishing in the BOP, (at least not for me) and I only managed one trip over the Christmas period. So the other alternative was to teach the young fulla how to catch, prep and smoke eels from the Waiari river. Catching eels and trout was a favourite pastime for me as a kid and it still is. So what better way to pass the knowledge to the younger generation. It makes my heart glow when the younger ones constantly talk about how much fun they had. :angel:

Simple smoked eel recipe;

Splice open , (no need to remove slime, adds favour). Add salt and leave to dry for a few hours. Add brown sugar then pop in the smoker until cooked.

If you haven't tried eel, give it a whirl. I liken the taste to Salmon, it's very rich and oily. :y:

Love smoked eel. We use to catch them up at hukerenui when we were kids,my older brother made a smoker and we used tea tree (manuka) when it's done right it is beautiful and I agree it's like salmon. Rich in omega 3 oil. I took my son back where we use to go and taught him how to catch and prep them. Some nice rivers there,heaps of fresh water koura and trout.
