he battery on my Uniden Voyager reently packed up. Got a new one, turned VHF on - 3/4 charged turn off, intot eh charger cradle. Charge LED (on cradle) lights up and slowly fades out.

Take the VHF out, turn it on again - nothing, dead as.

Put it back in the charger - nothing, no charge light.

Unplug charger, wait a while and try agian. I get a short illumination of the charge light but it fades out again.

The AC/DC adapter is providing 12v DC as it should. There doesn't seem to be any voltage at the cradle terminals. I'm not sure if the cradle is stuffed or it needs to sense a particular voltage/current/resistance from the battery to activate?

The behaviour of the VHF seems odd too. I'm tempted top try the correct battery voltage from a bench top DC supply and see how it goes.

Any thoughts. Having just shelled out for a new battery I'd like to get it going again, rather than buy new.

The snapper are running down here so I need to sort myself out fairly soon.

Possibility that the previous 'dud' battery was in fact OK, and it might have been the charger all along....

The old battery was physically distorted/swollen so I would say definitely stuffed. But it could be that the crad;e ahs been stuffed all along too.

Might have to shell out for new one. 6W, IP68 rated Uniden's are on special at Burnsco till Xmas ...

Got myself a Uniden MHS050 Handheld VHF from Burnsco (one of those yellow floating ones) and the charger did the same, lit up when charging and then just died.
Took it back and it ended up being the charging cradle which they swapped out for me.

I might be pushing my luck with a warranty claim. It's over 5 years old.

Time to bite the bullet and shell out for a new VHF.

I'm going to get the mhs-235 http://uniden.co.nz/NEW_ZEALAND/p_mhs235_index.asp.

$300 with waterproof bag.

It a shame aye, cause they are a very good unit, just pisses me off the $$$ for a replacement battery, I see they are a few places in Aus that sell the batteries at a reasonable price but wont ship to NZ...
My new Icom arrived last week which seems a nice unit :y:

Bit the bullet and picked up a Uniden MHS-235. I was also tempted by the more compact Uniden model but it had rotary controls for squelch and volume. These can be hard to adjust once the VHF is in a waterproof pouch. The 235 has all push button control.

Other features

IP 68
2.5W/5W/6W transmit
Floats
Integral GPS
Integral strobe light.

Not sure how much use the GPS will be ...

You are welcome to try my charger as well if you want. I had identical issues - swollen battery pack, light comes on then fades. Battery discarded - apparently an explosion risk when they are that swollen.

Shame as it was a good little radio.

Mental, If you managed to track down that charger cradle I'd still be keen to have it.

Bugger, sorry Mike, didn't think you wanted it and one got thrown out last week, I'm packing the garage this week ready for moving, if I come across another one I'll give you a shout.
